It appears that my throttle cable is about to break. It has streached and is binding in its housing. My question is – how do you get to the end of the cable that attaches to the gas pedal? Do you remove a panel or something? My FiberFab body makes it impossible to see this connection.
Lifting the body from the VW chassis looks like a major job. Has anyone done that?

The accelerator SHOULD be a solid piece of stainless steel cable. You get to it by disconnecting the cable from the gas pedal. To do that you will at least have to loosen the two bolts that hold the pedal cluster to the tunnel. Sometimes you end up having to unbolt the pedal cluster completely but usually not. Underneath the car, somewhere near the left rear wheel you’ll find a cable clamp (if it has the cable shortner). Disconnect that clamp and pull the accelerator cable out the front tube by the gas pedal. Grease the new cable with molylube and reinstall it. When all done, you’ll probably have to check the engine idle etc. Look through the manuals in the download manuals tab on the left for your car and it’ll explain the process of installing the gas pedal and cable. That’ll give you a good idea of what’s going on in the tunnel.Allen Caron

"If one thing matters, everything matters" - from the book The ShackDecember 30, 2011 at 11:43 am #248525Not sure how the fiberfab body could be blocking access to the gas pedal. Can you show us a a picture?
The throttle cable comes out of the center tunnel and its cable housing to connect to a hook on the pedal assembly.
In this picture, right near the center tunnel, there is a vertical bar with a light colored roller at the top. On the tunnel side of that roller is the hook for the throttle cable. You can see part of the throttle cable tube emerging from the tunnel on the right side of the picture (to the right of the gas pedal itself).
Loosen the cable from the carb and remove the end piece. You should be able to slide it forward, and remove it from the gas pedal lever. Then just slide it out from the gas pedal end of the cable housing.
If the modifications were made correctly, you should be able to access all of this without loosening the pedal assemply.
The same is not true for the clutch cable. The “hook” for that is inside the center tunnel. In fact, if you do have to “go deep” to replace your throttle cable, you might want to do the clutch cable at the same time.
Here is another view of the assembly. You can see the cable coming out of the tunnel in this shot.

All I can see is where the extension rods go through this panel. Certainly I cannot see the original gas pedal. They cannot be seen from the bottom of the car, or from the front compartment.
My only hope is that the panel can be removed (which is now covered with my new carpet) or that access to that area can be made by removing the battery tray.

December 30, 2011 at 12:57 pm #248527Ah, at last now I understand.
Most kits, the pedals are relocated within the TD passenger compartment. I did not know FiberFab left the original pedal cluster in place and added a second set with connecting rods.
I’m sure it’s obvious, but you don’t want to come up through the floor pan.
If you go through the firewall, you will still have to be pretty flexible to get to the pedals.
FiberFab uses the stock VW gas tank, mounted in front of the firewall, right? I bet if you pull the gas tank, you will find you have access to the original pedals from above.

December 30, 2011 at 1:12 pm #248528I just read through the FiberFab manuals here on our web site.
The pedal cluster is relocated on the earlier FiberFab kits.
The adapters to add a second set of pedals, with extension rods to the original pedals was considered a poroduct enhancement and introduced with the MiGi II on May 1, 1979.
The revised approach eliminated cable shortening and the modifications to the tunnel, but it’s too bad they never thought about maintenance issues down the road.
I don’t know any early VW driver that has not had to replace a clutch or throttle cable.

The entire footwell (the sides and top) is fiberglass. I will give it a good look-see tomorrow (Granddaughter’s wedding at 4:00 today). Thanks for your comments and research.

December 31, 2011 at 1:34 pm #248531AnonymousInactiveGood News, the wedding was a huge success, the bride was beautiful, the groom (fresh out of Marine boot camp) spectacular in his dress blues, the food was excellent, and things are back to normal.
The other good news is that it was not my throttle cable that was destructing, but the connecting rod from the old pedal to the new one had become somewhat disconnected and was binding on the fiberglass panel. So, a quick reconnect and things are good to go.
Thanks for all the input.
