September 20, 2012 at 10:30 pm #251916Very cool.
I didn’t run out and measure my car, is 60 inches wide enough for the track on our TDs?
And one thought for our tail-heavy TD based cars….the trailer might not balance properly with a VW based TD on it. Just something to think about before bidding.

September 21, 2012 at 12:56 am #251917Since my birthday is coming up, I did go measure. I’d need about 61-1/2″ to the outside of my sidewalls….not quite wide enough. (My wire wheels may account for a bit more width.) Re: balance, maybe the axle is easily move-able as is often the case on single axled trailers.
September 21, 2012 at 1:26 am #251918Good question for the seller.
But my bet is no. Key words “…manufactured by a friend…”
This is a home built special.

September 21, 2012 at 10:06 am #251919There’s no springs on that axle, it’s mounted directly to the frame, which would give a real rough and bouncy ride to the whole rig.
The mechanism that locks the trailer bed level, keeps it from pivoting, looks pretty light and flimsy. Like mentioned, with all the weight on the rear of those rails from our rear engined cars, I would be wary of that breaking free and releasing, and having the car roll off the trailer as you were driving, especially after going over a big bump in the road.September 21, 2012 at 10:20 am #251920I just heard from the owner. He said that the rails can not be moved to allow for a wider wheel track. Also, the axle can not be moved to balance the load and correct tongue weight. I really don’t think that this would work well for the VW engined TDs (even if your track is <60". I don't want it for a birthday present.
September 21, 2012 at 1:25 pm #251921You could back a car onto a trailer.
September 21, 2012 at 3:25 pm #251922Duh. You know, I never even thought of that!
Although…many years ago, an employee of Classic Roadsters Ltd. was towing a car to a kit car show in Cincinnatti. The car was on the trailer backwards, with a tonneau cover. The roof was not up.The windshield blew out of the car.Paul Mossberg

September 21, 2012 at 5:19 pm #251923There’s much more stress on the windshield in that case with the wind from astern rather than from the front of the car, and I was going to mention that too. that I’d be afraid because of the angle of the glass and the trapping of air, that the windshield would get ripped off or blown out.
There are innumerable reasons that that trailer is not appropriate for our cars and to look for a rationalization to get it makes no sense. Maybe someone can use it to tow 2 motorcycles, but that trailer is still unsprung which I don’t like.
September 21, 2012 at 5:30 pm #251924I’ll just stick with my huge dual axle car hauler. To bad its not enclosed. But my Silverado and trailer combo hauled up a Mustang to Cincinnati and a different one back withoput a hickup. Didn’t know the car was back there most of the time.

September 23, 2012 at 12:51 pm #251926Well said Ed – A five minute hook up at most
September 23, 2012 at 1:19 pm #251927Ditto – Best aftermarket investment I made for my car.
September 23, 2012 at 1:47 pm #251928Sure wish they made a easy hook up tow bar for my Ford based auto. Oh well still lookin for a trailer.
September 23, 2012 at 3:24 pm #251929Anyone know of a good towing bar hook up for the London Roadsters? also ..I use pure gas at my nearest station. They only have 93 Octane..while 7 miles away they have 87.. should I just be using 87?. thxzjebarry2012-09-23 15:31:30
September 23, 2012 at 6:52 pm #251930Now that my Duchess is running again, I don’t think I EVER want to tow!
Of course, that’s pretty bold of me to say, as there is no right seat passenger right now. I’m hopeful some day there will be, and she may have something to say about how far is ok in the TD.
