    I saw the ebay ad that Ray10 linked to for those pictures.

    I beleive the lenses are correct. But those are not TD bases. They are probably for an MGA. The ebay ad is wrong.

    This is an L549:

    Beenthere…are you able to clarify based on the pictures?

    And for what it’s worth…complete L549 reproductions, including lenses, bases, bulbs and gaskets are available for $70 a pair.

    If the L549 was used on MG TDs, this explains how the same L549 can be used on an MG TD and an MGA with very different slopes to the rear fenders.

    On an MGA the L549 mounts to an additional base, normally painted body color:

    Now read the next post about the correct TD tail lights.

    @pmossberg

    The L549 would work and look MUCH better than VW tail lights. But the L549 is not the original TD tail light.

    There are two styles of lights used on original TDs.

    Early TD’s have a more rectangular/squared off lens.

    Later TDs and TFs used a simple round tail light

    This is a line drawing from Moss Motors, but I think you can see the difference to the L549 lens and base. The early TD is in the box labeled “54”, the later TD and TF is in the box labeled “61”:

    Here is a rear shot of an earlier TD. You can see the “squared” tail light:

    And here is a 1953 round tail light TD:

    Sorry to be so anal about this. But a lot of what we do here is educate each other. If you are trying to achieve an authentic look and are going to spend money doing it, I just want you to make informed decisions.

    Bravo, Paul.

    I do believe that MGA style light looks a little better on most replicas than the original deal, because the replicas usually have the VW plinth molded in to the fender. The MGA item is, I think, a little bigger and seems to blend better than the early TD style. The round ones–forget it, unless you’re grinding and re-filling the molded plinth part on your fenders.

    All bets off for those with BCWs (early style TD tail lights, standard equipment) or Allisons (which come with the late round tail lights).

    @pmossberg

    Ed, that is a great observation!

    That molded in part on my Duchess’ fenders is what has kept me from installing the set of reproduction original TD taillights that I have.

    I may take a look at the MGA lights.

    Hi DAvid (beenthere).

    What are you asking?

    And what would the expense be to ship to the USA?

    Thanks!
