Took my ordinary white seat upholstery from the kit and a piece of red fiberglass from the gas tank cut out to a local shop called “Over The Top”. I asked them if they could un-sew the stitching along the seat bottom and seat back seams and add a piece of red lacing to match the red of the fiberglass. They said they could do it and they would get the red as close as possible. Should have it done in about a month because of their backlog. Cost is $150.00 and I figure it’s money well spent. It should add a little zing to the seats. I’ll post the pictures when they finish and I pick them up.

November 14, 2013 at 1:15 pm #258782I think you’re talking about red “piping” on the seams. If so, I think that will add a really nice touch. Just using red stitching wouldn’t catch your eyes and attention, IMO.
Since they have to take out the current stitching between the panels any way, you may want to consider replacing some of the existing vinyl with a contrasting color, to really make it “pop.”1. Perhaps the center seat-back panel with a contrasting color. Perhaps use the body color or the color of the carpet. That would make it look more like two bucket seats, and would really catch your attention, IMO. Something like the back seat of this Mercedes:2. Alternatively replacing the side sections on the cushions, leaving the seating area one color and the sides another. That would get something like this going, though the areas of contrasting color would be smaller:Not suggesting modifying the seats, but I do think that replacing a couple of vinyl panels with a contrasting color could give a real classic, eye-catching look… I’m suggesting this only because you’re planning on unstitching what you have already.Vinyl is cheap — a yard of “flat, unpleated vinyl” for $45 or so could really make a difference in the look…Or, combine body-colored vinyl piping between the panels with added/replaced panels that match your carpet (black, I’m guessing) and tie it all together…KentT2013-11-14 13:47:11

Two-tone seats were common, especially on American cars, in the 1950s. Those that weren’t two-tone were often made of two different materials…He wouldn’t be the first to do it to a TD, yet he could end up with a distinctively different lookEarly FF TDr on 69 VW pan
Slowly coming back from the ashes...November 14, 2013 at 6:50 pm #258785Kent. I like the idea in your second photo except for two things. If I went that way I’d have to match the panel with the seat back. The seat cushion has to much red. Second is I don’t have bucket seats. I have separate seat cushions and a single bench seatback. I’m not certain how the large red seatback area would look. Still have time decide. I go Saturday to finalize what I want. I’m also going to add a little red trim along the top of the door pocket.

"If one thing matters, everything matters" - from the book The ShackNovember 14, 2013 at 7:15 pm #258786How about just a wide strip up the center of the seat back, leaving the seating areas top and bottom as they are? Then add the piping.
Something kind of like this, with a narrower center section on the backrest and the seating areas (bottom and back) wider. Your seats are white and the body red, correct? What about a red strip in the center of the current white seat back — only as wide as the center tunnel between the bottom seats. Leave the bottom seating area as is — and have the white parts of the seatback on each side the same width as the white bottoms. Then put red panels around the sides/edges.KentT2013-11-14 19:40:11

Slowly coming back from the ashes...November 14, 2013 at 7:22 pm #258787The TD Kent pictured has seats from a TF, I think. Personally I prefer the more distinctive one-back-two-seat look of the stock TD, but like Kent said, whatever turns your crank.
(And real buckets are probably a lot better for those impromptu 250-mile jaunts to Virginia Beach).;)November 14, 2013 at 9:04 pm #258788BTW, here’s an example of contrasting piping.

"Drive Happy"November 20, 2013 at 11:40 am #258795Looking forward to seeing it in the car. I think that the piping will tie the interior with the body color without losing the brightness of the interior.
November 20, 2013 at 12:26 pm #258796Thanks for the kind words. I chose red piping to break up the white interior and black carpet. As on the exterior, I wanted to break up the solid red by adding white piping betweern the fenders. I used the same reasoning for the interior. I think it’ll look reaaly good.
