OK, since I totally can’t hang with you big boys re suspension. One more (highly unlikely) engine option. http://syracuse.craigslist.org/cto/3367376417.html
Oh man, what a project. Engine alone is probably $10,000. Or double that.
October 28, 2012 at 7:30 pm #252302OK, twin cam six swap. How about Toyota Supra 3.0 litre, 220hp, 320 w/turbo.

"Drive Happy"October 28, 2012 at 8:15 pm #252303maybe find a wrecked S2000?
October 28, 2012 at 8:44 pm #252304Don’t know much about the S2000 engine but I have driven one a couple of times. I love that engine, it really likes to rev.
November 10, 2012 at 7:54 am #252305I’ve committed to Mustang II this week and bought a 1976 2300/4 speed parts car, but do not plan on using the engine. Does anyone know if the 2300 4 speed and bellhousing will fit on a 2800 V6?
November 10, 2012 at 8:48 am #252306Dunno but strongly would bet yes. Bill?edsnova2012-11-10 08:48:36

"Drive Happy"November 10, 2012 at 11:15 am #252308My cataloging is too vague for something that old. My suggestion is taka a pizza to your local Ford parts department and bribe them to cross reference the applications for both and see if they would use the same part number. I never played with the V6. I used the T-bird bellhousing from the Turbo Coupe to mate the later Mustang 5 speed. 4 cyl and V8 Tremac 5 speeds are interchangable externally. Input and output shafts are different.
Sorry to be of no help.

"Drive Happy"November 10, 2012 at 12:37 pm #252309When I took the straight 6 and 3-speed out of my ’67 Nova and replaced with a 350 from a ’74 truck and a wide-ratio Muncie 4-speed, I used the same bell housing. Ford will likely be similar. The Cologne 2.8 and the 2.3 went in the same cars and probably used all the same transmissions.
Still a guess though.
Did you call that Pinto owner whose craigslist ad I sent? Wonder if he put that V6 in.
November 10, 2012 at 12:44 pm #252310Looking about. This guy was all into documenting what fits with what. The email link still works. No idea if he’s still there though.
UPDATE (and I quote):
Still here.
He will need a new bellhousing. The 2.3 and 2.8 are very different.

November 10, 2012 at 9:08 pm #252311Thanks. I think there’s a guy up in York PA trying to sell a 2.8 with bellhousing. I also will need proper flywheel.
November 11, 2012 at 12:22 pm #252312Found this as part of another link. Just further confirmation.
PS: Sorry forgot direct answer: NO 4-cyl engine will bolt up to a 2.9 bellhousing. Only a 2.9/2.8 or a 4.0 (but that could present its own problems). All these are v6s. 3.0 v6 has its own bellhousing pattern, by the way.
