Hi Al, I like you was unable to work on the car or bike for a few weeks,, the end result was lots of ideas and planning went on!  Unwind, enjoy the rest;  a repaired shoulder will allow you to resume work on the new project ideas soon.

    Hi Paul,

Im using a laptop pc.  It loaded the previous picture fine, I have tried the others using the same method with no luck, I shall keep on playing with it as time allows.

    Thanks

    Hi Guys

Well the new footwell is a resounding success in that the passenger now has some room for his or her feet. The sheet aluminum box was fairly easy to fold up even without a box and pan folder. I merely used two pieces of 4×2 as the folder. The box you have to make is 10″ from top to bottom with 12″ square sides. The box must narrow to 10″ at the bottom to accommodate the body structure shape on the right hand side. That sounds more complicated than it actually is. The only other work I had to do was to move a ground connection that I found behind the panel that I cut out.

    Hi Paul,

I think you have mentioned your  gas tank placement in the past. I am; for now anyway happy with the gas tank size. The leg room was becoming more of an issue with the other half.  These are the during construction pictures. Very simple task of cutting the fibreglass section, the most effort will be in the folding of the new box to make it into a footwell again. I will also have to reroute a few ground wires.

    Its all good fun anyway.

    Hi guys

We are a group of people that may well be able to somewhat understand what it took to complete this car. Our cars came as whole entities or as a kit of parts. This guy had to  make/find/modify parts as required, an incredible task to undertake for anyone. His biggest break in my opinion was finding the body in Italy. That alone brings him closer to what we do or are doing. The car he built simply looks stunning from any angle. The music the exhaust pipes make brings a smile to any gearhead.

I have had first hand experience of driving one of the original Testa Rossas and can vouch for the fact that it is quite an experience.  It was once part of my daily duties to drive such things on a daily basis. Those days were some highlights of my working life.  Ones I shall never forget.

    Hi Guys

As I have stated in the past I am going to rewire the car myself. The FF wiring on the car is all white or it was anyway. The end of a few of the wire  runs has small rubber sleeves with numbers on them (some sort of wiring code) I have a great deal of experience with old French cars and they use a similar system with the same coloured wire and small number tags on the end of a wire run to identify the circuit.

    Hi John/Paul

My dash actually fits pretty well as the previous owner had taken weeks over getting it right. He also stated that he would “never do it again”. I  was just toying with the idea of a complete original dash etc So im going to take the hint and give up on that idea.  I will still go for the old style gauges and switches etc.

All this is of course after this piece of XXXX comes off my arm. We are entering what they call monsoon season here in the desert, that means 100 plus temps with rain or a similar humidity. That doesn’t do the cast or arm any favours.

Regards, John who is still the Brit for now.

    Hi Guys

The concept of using MGB running gear is I think a decent one. The concept of using the MGB frame is flawed. The MGs rocker panels are structural in a big way. Get that wrong and you have a problem waiting to bite you  in the nether regions!  He should have used a custom or even a small truck frame and just used the B running gear, in my humble opinion anyway. $1500 to rich for my blood. It will be interesting to see where this thing ends up.

    Hi Guys.

Well 4 days without doing anything is enough. The idle vale has been changed out with no improvement to the gas dropping into the cylinders on shut off. Fuel pressure lowered from 5 pounds to 3.5 pounds.  No change, placed an extra washer under the needle vale in the float chamber. Again no change but noted that  the valve was not the original type, it had been replaced with a grose jet. Replaced the grose jet with a new original  type but left the two washers under its seat. A quick look down the carb throat and it looks better with no fuel flooding everywhere. By this time the hand is telling me to quit being stupid and rest it like I was told.!! I had to give up for today but I am hopefull, Needs further investigation. Thanks for listening.

Thanks for the help. right now the arm wont let me do anything, I cant even hold a wrench  or screwdriver except if I jam it between the cast and my palm. We shall see.

    Hi guys

So here is the update so far. The shut off valve has been replaced so the car now idles fine and doesn’t run on etc. The fuel still runs into the engine after you shut it off so no improvement there.   I think that only leaves me with the float height being at fault ??.  All work on the car has come to a halt for few weeks as I have now broken the bones in the back of my hand and its now in a full cast. grgrgrrgrggr frustration abounds!

As an addendum to  the last story, Win also raced a Ex Works rally Mk1 Ford escort. It was parked up behind   his filling station when he retired the car. I purchased the car from him as a worn out race car and put it back on the road, It cost me a total of 400 Gbp. about $600.  Anyway it was way to rich for my blood to run it. A full works prepared BDA twin cam, running twin 40s just sucks down the gas too! When I was offered my money back to sell it I did so very willingly! This brings me to a point that I have seen Ed mention in the past about old cars, especially old race cars being original. Win rebodied the car three times (complete new bodies each time) I replaced the engine twice. The car was sold a short time ago as an ORIGINAL works rally car with extensive history for $123000 !!!!!! Yeah right all original!!! So our cars are all original too. Big Smile! I took my 400 gpb and went back to minis!

I was 19 and headed to work early one morning back in the early 70s driving to work in my home built Mini. It, the car, started out as a stock 1071cc Cooper but at that time was running with a 1340cc motor. So no traffic and small English country roads in the west country of Dorset.  I was happy, having fun throwing the little thing around when I was aware of some brown and orange monster coming up fast. It looked like a 240Z and he was flying. We must have driven 15 miles with me trying to stay in control as I made the little 12″ wheels work hard as he was drifting the big Z car on the corners trying to get past me. After 15 miles or so the road changed from a small country road to a much wider open one with some long ish straights.  We came around the last corner just before the first straight side by side then he floored it. Off it went with a huge roar..  I chased him as best I could but no way could I get very close to him. I did get to read the sign on the back of the car,, SUPER SAMURAI …  A brown and orange painted Z.  We parted company when he pulled off into a different part of Weymouth and I continued to work, As he turned his arm came out of the side window and he waved,, It was just two cars and two guys having fun.  I made enquires about the car and the driver.. It turned out that the driver was Win Percy the national saloon car champion, the car was his track car that he also kept road legal, as he used it in rally events as well.  After writing this I looked both Win and Super Samurai up, Both are still around. The car  has been restored to the same livery that it wore that early morning. I wonder if he remembers that day too???

Hi Kent. very interesting observation. This begs the question as to what exactly is the optimum ride height and where does one measure it to and from. In a normal bodied vehicle for example you would measure from the centre of the front spindle to the bottom edge of the fender. giving measurement X. In theory and mass production that number is going to be the same. Give or take a tad bearing in mind factory limits and fits.  With our cars where there are numerous variables such as fender fitment and even the wheels used etc where would be the common factor/ From ground to the floor? That issnt even taking into consideration the aesthetics and who built it.

    Hi Guys.

Thanks Kent that clears that up for me. It was the  bug guys that told me that  it was a solenoid aaair bleed valve. Incidentally he also stated that none of our cars needed the caster shims, unless the vehicle had only been lowered in the front and in doing so change the caster angle  on the front. He also added that if the car were to be lowered both front and back the car would need no such work.

    Interesting. John

    Hi Guys

I have a PICT 34 on the car with the anti run on valve fitted. I took the valve out and tried it on a battery. It will work intermittently. Doesn’t that valve merely open an airway to help shut the engine down. Im not sure how or why that would cause  the excess fuel. I  have a new valve on the way, the local guys were out of stock. Thanks for the help.

    Hi Guys,

I seem to still have the same issue after reducing the fuel pump pressure. What happens is the fuel still drops into the motor after it has been shut off. The only way to start the car is to floor the throttle/crank it for a while and it will limp to life because it has so much fuel in the cylinders. The PO told me about this before I purchased the car. He replaced the fuel pump, carb and fitted a carbon tank to the gas tank at the time but none of these “fixes” worked. Is there a measurement for the float height?

    John
