Actually I think th e float may have stuck in the carburetor..The TD was running  very  rough  the next  day  … ..The power seemed ok but  after 8 hours on the road I was kinda numb to anything !..

Mark, I had exactly same issue….and found out not to leave the seat
belt buckle lying on the running board…while fueling up ! the gas
milage was @33mpg for the section along US220 which was small
towns and city traffic.
Is your chassis a custom or V W PAN?

Ed..thanks …I questioned my sanity .as I left Roanoke ..it was all good
Sally my  small girl  is always happy on the  passengerside  floor of any  car and Pudge on the passenger seat ..a good fit..and they  kept me warm when the sun set last tnight….I felt like I  went back in time 75 years…

Allen,  thanks so much  .I   did  a trip from Eastern NC to Louisville Kentucky in a ’59 Austin healey Sprite bug eye-the sprite  in ’66 the bug eye  was worn out then and still made it  fine. I am totally psyched  for this  trip!
