I second the recommendation of putting a shut-off a foot or so downstream of the gas tank. Also means that you can place a fuel filter right after the shutoff and that will make replacing the filter easier.

So that brings up a new question.  Were bugs destined for convertable bodies factory-reinforced, making them more suitable for kit car conversions?

I had a very similar experience (without the ice cream).  Turns out that my tires, which looked great and had plenty of tread were 10-12 years old and were delaminating inside.  At the tire shop one of the fronts could not even be balanced.  New tires fixed the problem.
