Well, a guy on eBay had three original TD rear splash pans for sale, with the option to Make an Offer. So, I did — at about 1/2 what he was asking, and surprisingly he accepted the offer…
So, I should have a metal, original TD splash pan arriving in a few days. We’ll see how close to authentic these early FF kits were…I thought metal might b… -

Good locations for both your temp sensors, IMO.Some like to read oil temp from other locations such as the bypass spring/valve galley behind the pulley tin or stock the oil pressure sensor hole, but I like to read it from the sump — before it comes… -

BTW, I ran across these while researching handling issues, and wanted to bring the link back…
I knew you could get weld-on replacements for the pan stiffener’s that were added to the outside edges of the stock VW pan when convertible bodies were added by Karmann-Ghia, the coach builder for all the cabriolets (aka convertibles). Convertibles… -

Head temps on #3 should run around 325-350 most of the time, and creep up during extended highway cruising or while sitting in traffic.
Oil temps, like Ed says, should be in the 190-210 range, with an additional +/- 10 degrees not being a cause for SERIOUS concern. If it climbs above 220-225, start looking for the cause. Stop and let the en… -

I like that dash layout, with two rows/levels of gauges in the center — it follows the lines of the cowling nicely!

Roy, thanks for sharing your experience. I wouldn’t mind boosting the rear end back up a smidgeon — though I don’t think I need the clearance, necessarily — so maybe Ed’s idea of Gas-Adjusts on the rear would do that, while really not adding additional spring rebound to what’s there now.
I do think there will be the potential for more t… -

I don’t have noticeable sag of one side more than the other, though the entire rear is “droopy” — likely due to the original manual’s decambering one notch method… so those coil-overs might be a possibility.
My concern is getting too harsh a ride, or causing the soon-to-be softer front to “plow.” Most of the weight change with the fi… -

What suggestions for rear shocks? GR2s or just OEM oil-filled, or what?I picked up my fresh, used front beam this afternoon, and it came with the torsion leaves and a pair of used oil-filled shocks. That will be my starting point on the new front suspension…But, if the rears are anything like the ones I pulled o… -

Wow, that is a GREAT price! I paid $1600 for mine, in MUCH, MUCH worse condition…

The Kennedy Stage I didn’t cause any problems — it would just wear my left leg out if I got caught in traffic or something. It “locked up” nice and smooth, and didn’t slip, which was my goal. It was in a ’64 Bus with the reduction box axles and a final drive ratio of about 6:1 or something (don’t remember the actual numbers). All I r…[Read more]

Thanks for the vote of confidence, Ed. I’m guessing the peak power on this thing will be about 4750 RPM or something close — almost definitely not past 5,000 with these heater boxes. With this light of a car, I don’t think I’ll need to be over 5,000 often on the street. I’m not building a dragster — I trying to turn this thing into a fun sp…[Read more]

Glad to see that my musings and verbosity are of some value…One other thing, I’ll add for posterity. Next step of engine build complete. I was able to get access to a shop with a VW test setup — a cutaway tranny — and accomplished initial startup and cam break-in with no complications, using existing HPMX manifolds and some J-tubes and engine tin that I borrowed.
