  • If I recall correctly, John Muir’s Book has a section  which covers an “A” kit (for local driving) and a “B” kit (for trips.) The “A” kit has fan belt, points, plugs, condenser, rotor, cap, one coil wire, the longest spark plug wire and a couple of spare bulbs all stored in a shoe box. The “B” kit had the “A” kit plus a few other parts (…[Read more]

I like the Ebrake lever. It’ll be interesting to know if it operates only the rt brake or if it works both brakes.

  • Check out “Rob and Dave’s Air Cooled VW Pages at http://www.vw-resource.com

They cover just about all the usual VW problems you’re likely to encounter. And as Roy has said, use those copper crush washers. Also, as recommended by Rob and Dave, if you don’t have a drain plug in the sump plate replace it with one that does have the drain. It l…[Read more]

  • Distributor problem update. Took the distributor out and took all the accu-fire electronic ignition pieces out and swapped with the Petronix ignition module etc. Turned out to be the spacer required for the stock vacuum advance distributor in the accu-fire ignition system was too thick and did not allow magnetic rotor and all above it to fit down…[Read more]

  • Happy jack. I’ll definitely check that also. I’m thinking the locating pin on the module being a tad too fat or the spacer under the magnetic rotor not fitting down over distributer shaft all the way. More to follow tomorrow.

  • Ed. My coil is a Petronix and the ignition module is an EMPI Accu-Fire. I’ll pull the dizzy and get a better look at it and post pictures of what it looks like tomorrow. I don’t work on Sundays. Call me old fashioned but Sundays are my day of rest.

  • Hey folks.

Installed the electronic ignition module in Moneypenny, Put the electronic unit in, added the spacer ring for a stock distributor, put the magnetic rotor on, installed the ignition rotor…….the rotor doesn’t go on all the way. Took off the spacer ring and retried it. Same results. Its an ACCU-FIRE Ignition Module from EMPI. Oh…[Read more]

  • Busy day today. Not only did I correct the hole for the voltmeter, I also got all the Lift-The-Dot studs installed. Except for the doors. I don’t have the side curtains to locate where to attach the studs. Must have left it in storage with the convertible top cover. I’ll get it in the morning.

  • Well I got a small piece of 1 inch thick mahogany from a friend of mine who milled it down to the thickness of the dash The using his drill press cut a 2-1/4 inch diameter plug. I glued and pressed in the plug (using a large rubber mallet) and let her dry this afternoon. Tomorrow I’ll drill out the hole for the gauge. A 2 inch diameter hole will…[Read more]

I like what dbanta says. I mean…isn’t that whole idea of rebuilding a TD, TDr, Mustang, Karmann Ghia or any other car. To enjoy driving the car. We usually don’t recoup the cost of our hobby and that leaves enjoyablity. When Moneypenny is complete and on the road, I’m driving her as often as I can. Cold weather and bigotry be damned!  😀 B…[Read more]

When I had my VW Karmann Ghia Club, we had a t-zhirt that read: “Karmann Ghias turn men into mechanics.” The same might be true here. And like Ed says “More fun per dollar ratio.”

  • My .02 cents worth. I used to run a small can of Gumout oil cleaner in my engine for about 5 minutes to dissolve the sludge out of the oil and internal ports. Then I’d drain the oil and change the filter before filling with fresh oil. Not sure if they still make Gumout for the oil system anymore since they came out with the synthetic blends.

    I li…[Read more]

Bill. I love your answer. I might borrow it when Moneypenny is on the road.

  • Bill. I did have one that fit but it was an amp gauge. I hate those things so ordered a voltage gauge from MG Magic that I thought would have fit the hole. But the hole diameter is just a tad bigger than 2 inch diameter.  🙁

  • Dave. Mine is a VDO gauge that secures to the dash with the two threaded rods and the aluminum bridge bracket you mentioned. I haven’t thought of using a wooden plug drilled out to fit the gauge. I could glue the plug into the dash and countersink three screws on the back side into the plug for extra security. Of course, whatever method I use, I…[Read more]

  • While I was letting my tonneau cover dry after cleaning, I decided it was time to mount the voltmeter I got from MG magic. Harness was ready and I just needed to install the voltmeter. Well…..the voltmeter fits but I cannot tighten the mount nuts. Seems the voltmeter body outer diameter (including the face bezel) is just a tad bit smaller than…[Read more]

  • Well my Lift-The-Dots, tool and canvass cleaner just arrived. Now if it’ll not rain today I might actually get something done that I can report results to. Canvass cleaner is for my stained and dirty tonneau cover. As mentioned, I’ll let you know the results. Photos as well if I can figure out the new camera.

Greg. I checked my ignition module hookup and what I posted was not correct. I have the Accu-Fire Ignition Module and for mine the instructions say the RED wire from the ignition module connects to the coil positive (+) terminal (#15) and the BLACK wire from the ignition module connects to the coil negative (-) terminal (#1). I still think that…[Read more]

The coil has two connections where smaller wires are either bolted or push-on connected. On one side (terminal #1) is a thin wire (usually green) that goes from the coil to the distributor (or electronic ignition module); on the other side (terminal 15) are wires (usually black) that brings power from the ignition switch; a fused wire to the b…[Read more]

  • Per my assembly manual, I am supposed to drill a 2-1/2 inch hole with the center of the hole 2-1/2 inches from the outer edge of the seat base. But the Fiberfab manual says to locate the seat base and drill a pilot hole through the front end of the seat base and straight back into the body tub. But both assembly manuals say drill a 2-1/2 inch hole…[Read more]
