newkitman replied to the topic Headlights work…sometimes in the forum VW Based Kits 8 years, 4 months ago
I’d first check the ground wire. Could be loose. Pull the headlight and check the headlight connector. The ground wire (if VW color coding is used will be BROWN.) If not VW wiring it’ll be black and probably will NOT run all the way to the dash. Most likely it’ll run to the chassis somewhere near the headlight area. My TD is a Fiberfab and is…[Read more]

newkitman replied to the topic Generator vs. Alternator in the forum VW Based Kits 8 years, 4 months ago
A couple of other things.
The new alternators come internally regulated therefore the current external voltage regulator is no longer required. You may find some outfit selling externally regulated alternators but there are not many. The external voltage regulator can be removed but I’d save it.
You’ll have to change the fuel pump and fuel…[Read more]

Okay. I had some damage to my passenger door due to the severe storms. I removed the door, made the repairs and am currently painting. I have some photos to post which leads to these questions.
(1) When I first add a photo, I go to my gallery and add the photos; then in the topic post, I select the photos I want to add and cut and paste.…[Read more]

I tend to get my cork valve cover gaskets from a vendor at VW shows. I manage to keep a dozen on hand as spares and when I get down to four gaskets, I pick up some more at the next VW show. I usually get them cheaper there.

Greg. ALWAYS go with the cork gaskets. Even VW at the Chattanooga car plant says to stick with the cork gaskets.

No update. Decided to worry about that after I get the car on the road. Perhaps I’ll consider it sometime next year. Once I drive her around I’ll know if I really want to go that route.

Beal. Billnparts has a ford based kit and knows that configuration pretty well. Mine is a VW based kit so I’m not all that certain about the other non-VW kits. I’d follow the pinto based assembly manual and if that bracket is left over, then use it as in the VW manual if you want.

Linda and I went to the Bug-A-Paluza in Chattanooga today. Had great weather and other than getting the truck bogged down in some mud, we had a fun time. Plus I scored not one but two rims with tires. And both for only $20. They’re in good shape and all they need is a little bit of cleanup. The tires are 215R15s. A little worn but that’ll give me…[Read more]

newkitman replied to the topic Gas Tank Liner in the forum MGTD Kit Parts and other stuff 8 years, 5 months ago
No problem. I have a few ideas. Raising the tank about 1/2 inch around the edges and adding some fiberglass to force any leak down into the front area since my battery is under the passenger seat.

Bill. Is your kit a VW based kit? I just enlarged the photo you posted. I believe those two square 4 x 4 plates are for mounting the seat back. They connect to the wood piece for the seat back and then the top part of the hinge fits into the slots in the square adapters. Check the VW Assembly manual, page 44 for the 15-inch angle piece and page 63…[Read more]

Bill. I don’t have a CMC Chevy/Ford kit I have a CMC/Fiberfab VW kit I’ve been building and the lower bar appears similar to the bar in my kit. Mine goes underneath the front fenders where they come together. It is extra support for the front of the fenders and keeps them aligned with each other. It also is used to mount the fog lights. As for the…[Read more]

Steve. I have a starter button that is used when doing maintenance on the car. I got it at AutoZone or O’Reilleys or one o them parts stores. Anyway; it just clips to the battery and the starter solenoid. Then press and hold the button till the engine starts. But But you still have to have the key on to provide power to the ignition system.…[Read more]

newkitman replied to the topic Name your ride? in the forum General Discussion 8 years, 5 months ago
You could stick with the Bond theme and call her “M”, and you could be the gadget guy “Q”! Peele is good though. Maybe the name of the British writer in Murder She Wrote. Just a few thoughts spinning around in my head. My TDr is “MoneyPenny” and my 74 Ghia was “Das Feureren” (the fox).

Paul. The Gas Tank Liner is shown in the CMC Assembly manual on page 48. It fits into the cutout for there gas tank and then the tank gets installed into the liner and body. The only purpose I can see for this is to prevent any fuel that leaks from the tank from entering the passenger compartment of there car. The body tub on my TDr does not allow…[Read more]

Anyone in the GA or TN area heading to Bug-a-paluza April 8th and 9th? I won’t be driving Moneypenny but I’ll be there on Saturday the 8th. Looking for one rim for my spare tire. A used one in good shape will do fine.
