Today we popped over to the shop the check on progress on my engine. It is coming along, the big thing right now is waiting on parts, the head we are reusing is cleaned and the valves ground and adjusted, engine block has been thrust cut, so hopefully I will have a “brand new” engine next week!

Yes, He is going to have them use different spark plugs so the heads don’t crack next to the threads, as well as have them give slightly less compression for the afore mentioned long life.

I don’t think I am going to enlarge the cylinders at all seeing as how I already got plenty of HP even to accelerate uphill in 4th. 😀 I have it down at the local VW guy (who has been working on VW for some 45 years) And he is going to be getting the new parts, he wanted special types of heads and pistons to get a longer lasting engine. Might c…[Read more]

I think this is a wonderful idea albeit difficult to implement.

So many things would be easier to work on with my TDr if I knew what the previous owners had done. There are so many oddities and things done wrong or not done that if what WAS done was documented could reduce my checklist a little bit.
But seeing this makes me think about keeping my…

So got the flywheel off last week, and the end play was loose so we took it down the local VW guy to see what he thought and to see if he could adjust it. Turns out the front main bearing is loose and is the cause of all my troubles!! So we tore the engine down and brought it back to bore it out for new bearings and give it a general inspection.…[Read more]

  • Gladly, but I won’t have time to take her out and do a little photo shoot until Sunday. It’s too dark by the time I’m home from work, otherwise I would do it tonight. I have the same problem when I’m trying to work on it… Dang winter sun.

The only piece of mahogany they could order was 1″x12″x10′ so I had them cut it in half to 5′ when I picked it up. It ran me about $75 for the whole thing, and I still have half of it left that I plan on planeing (That is spelled incorrectly, but the action of using a plane on the wood…) down to 1/2″ and doing my steering wheel in the same…[Read more]

  • The top is not at all heavy (I can carry it by myself) but due to its size it is not really possible to move it on and off the car by ones self. The center of gravity is a little bit behind the seat back, and in the middle.

Something to think about if you want to do it by yourself is maybe make it modular to some extent?
    Allen, That is pretty…

The stain is 225 Red Mahogany. I used one coat of it on 1″ mahogany plank that I got at the local lumber yard. The clear coat is just a standard gloss water based finish also by Minwax.

  • I put the current door panels on this last weekend. They fit alright, but not very snug against the top of the door, and they don’t go up to the windshield, although that should not matter too much once I get the passenger side wind wing done.

I used a 12″x1.5″ piano hinge bolted to the fiberglass top and screwed in to the door panel. It is not…

Got more work done over this last weekend, the dash is now done. At least until I decide to pay out some cash to get a stainless center console made… But I really like how it turned out! the glove box could use a little work but I’m sure that will get sorted out easily enough.

Anyway, here are a few pics, they are not great due to the top being…

  • Mine has the same problem just worse… The splash panel sits too low and on the driver side it is bent up to fit over the steering box. I have thought about molding a piece to glass in over the steering box, but it is not high on my priority list so it’ll have to wait.

You can see that the PO of mine also cut a hole (not very well obviously since…

Welcome! Looks like a good little kit! (Definitely a bit better condition than I got mine in ;))

  • I believe that your idea for the interior is very similar to what is currently in it. The vinyl was cut to shape and attached with some sort of adhesive (thus it is falling down in the back). I think the aluminum strips help hide the seams where the corners are. It is not actually upholstered from what I can tell. It is only upholstered on the…[Read more]

I did the glove box by first doing a cut along the bottom with a handheld circular saw, then going the rest of the way with a jigsaw.

While I am uploading pictures of the hard top I figured I might as well post some progress pictures of the dash. It is pretty much done right now except for finishing the glove box and putting the chrome on the edges. Anyway, enjoy the pictures! (Note they are not in the exact order)

These two are testing the stain and screw…

  • Hey, sorry the photos are a bit late, life got a bit hectic with Thanksgiving and everything. Here are some photos of the fiberglass top though.

    General overview.
There are panels on the inside on the left and right. I am not exactly sure what their purpose is but they are held on via screws from the exterior.
This shows the other side. There are…
