Thanks for the suggestion about the clutch. Even though it is an automatic stick will check that first.  Was able to figure out some other problems.  A mechanic friend of my son looked at it and helped with the carb install.  He also set the timing and points etc.  After rechecking them today, and looking at my “idiots” manual, found that he had set the points to almost nothing so I had to open those and then the timing was set to 7.5 deg ATDC, should have been 7.5 BTDC.  So got that corrected.  But with everything still having fun working on it.  Actually drove it around town last night and it really turned a lot of heads.  Took some pics of it and will try to get them downloaded soon.

    Thanks again for all help.

    Hi to all,

It has been sometime since visiting the site, just been to busy.  Still working on the engine (VW).  I have fixed the problems with the carb, just put a new one on, amazing it worked!  Then found out we had to put a new alternator in.  What a job that was, but had fun doing it.  I can actually get it to start now without a jump and it seems to idle fine (about 1100 rpms) in nuetral.  Having one more problem, hope someone can help out.  I checked my idiots manual and couldn’t find the answer.  The engine, like I said idles fine in nuetral.  When I shift into gear though the rpm’s drop to around 400 and it starts to stall.  I had the timing, points etc all set and I did a slight adjustment on the carb idle screw. Still wants to stall out. Any suggestions would really be appreciated.

Wanted to say to that Peggy and I went to the Replica Kit car show in Carlisle.  We only had one day to walk around but saw some very interesting cars.  We were a bit dissapointed we didn’t see more TD’s TF’s and the like, but we did talk to a few people who had TDs there. Was glad the weather held off and all in all we had a good time.  Even talked about taking ours next year (fingers crossed).

Thanks again to anyone who can help out the with the idle problem.

Finally picked up our car from Baltimore.  She is a beauty, will post some pics as soon as we get it cleaned up.  Thanks for the advice on getting the Volkswagon – Alive manual.  Has already paid for itself.  The carb issue, well it was the carb itself so installing a new one tomorrow.  A few other minor (I hope) projects and she will hum.  Have driven it around town a bit and it definetly has turned some heads.  Thanks again to all who answered my questions.  This is turning out to be a lot more fun than I had imagined.

We want to say thank you to all who responded to our question about out MG TD replica and to those who just said hi.  A very nice community to join to get info and share ideas.  Thanks again.  Did have one question for Rich, call me dense, in a response you said “automatic stick shift, very nice condition, minor Carb, stalling problem. Coincidence?”  Not sure what you are referring to.  Could it be the trans or the carb or a combination of both?

    Thanks to all again

    Rich,

Good guess, yes it is the one in Kensington.  I am not familiar with VW engines so this will definitely be a learning process, but we have a very good auto shop in this area and trust them.  So…..  Anyway thanks again for all the good info.  Look forward to learning more and chatting with other members.

    Rich and Ringo,

Thank you for such quick responses to my question.  Yes it is a fully built car and runs, although the seller says there are some minor carb issues.  Your responses are very helpful and gives us a good starting point.

Will be picking our “baby” up this Saturday and will post some pics as soon as I can.

    Thanks again
