Hi,
My wife and I are new to MG’s and are new owners of a replica 1951 MG TD. The seller really doesn’t know much about the car other than it is a VW engine (not sure of the size) on a VW chassis (not sure of the year). I need help coming up with a cost for the kit, chassis and the labor. Seller has no idea. I just need a “ballpark” figure for insurance purposes. I know it is a “lot depends on”, but I would really appreciate any help. We were also wondering if there are any members in the Binghamton, NY area.
Thanks for any help,
Steve and Peggy

Take a look at the General Discussion section. ValueJockey started a topic in January and Mark and I both reponded. The market values indicated are still valid.
Also, your message is not clear. Is this a fully built kit? Running? All parts there?
These kits cost $5 to 8K when new back in the 80s and very early 90s. That was FiberFab/Classic Motor Carriages. Others may have been more. Add another $3 to 5K for a Donor vehicle and any custom parts, weldments and you’re talking $8 to 13K to build. Market rates today for VW kits, fully built and functional run from $2500 (very rough) to $7500 (very nice). People occasionally ask more but seldom get it. Hope this helps.

Welcome to the forum.
Rich has you pretty well covered on the prices. You also might want to look under classifieds in the Running cars for sale section in the forum to get some other input. Just don’t be fooled by the ridiculous asking prices that some “collector” dealers have posted on the web.
I’m also curious re; whether you’re talking about a completed car or not. Either way, post some pictures if you can.

Thank you for such quick responses to my question. Yes it is a fully built car and runs, although the seller says there are some minor carb issues. Your responses are very helpful and gives us a good starting point.
Will be picking our “baby” up this Saturday and will post some pics as soon as I can.
Thanks again

Just curious, is this the black and gray Allison that sold recently on Ebay? Seller is in Kensington MD? This one was an automatic stick shift, very nice condition, minor Carb, stalling problem. Coincidence?

March 5, 2009 at 3:31 pm #238364Hi Steve & Peggy, Welcome to the group. It’s great that the two of you are in the replica hobby together. Rich and Ringo have covered the price -value question pretty well, however it is hard to put a $ value on the fun and fellowship you can have with these cars. This forum is a good example not to mention the head turns and thumbs up you get when you take your ”baby” out for a drive.Happy trails to you both. Larry M.
March 5, 2009 at 4:01 pm #238365Rich,
Good guess, yes it is the one in Kensington. I am not familiar with VW engines so this will definitely be a learning process, but we have a very good auto shop in this area and trust them. So….. Anyway thanks again for all the good info. Look forward to learning more and chatting with other members.

Take a look in the Photo Gallery for the member named “LARRY”. His is a beautiful Allison kit (in Red) but just like yours. Very solid well built kits. Best of luck with it and welcome to the TD Replica club.
There’s also a wealth of knowledge among the members on technical stuff related to VWs. Should be able to get plenty of good advice.

March 5, 2009 at 9:50 pm #238367Welcome aboard Steve and Peggy. It’ll be a fun ride.
Pick up a copy of “How to Keep Your Volkswagen Alive 19 Ed: A Manual of Step-by-Step Procedures for the Compleat Idiot (Paperback)“
It’ll tell you all you need to know about maintaining the practically indestructible VW engine.
It’s on Amazon for under $20.

March 7, 2009 at 6:27 am #238369We want to say thank you to all who responded to our question about out MG TD replica and to those who just said hi. A very nice community to join to get info and share ideas. Thanks again. Did have one question for Rich, call me dense, in a response you said “automatic stick shift, very nice condition, minor Carb, stalling problem. Coincidence?” Not sure what you are referring to. Could it be the trans or the carb or a combination of both?
Thanks to all again

March 7, 2009 at 7:06 am #238370Steve,
I was just referring to the mention of Carb/Stalling problem in the Ebay ad, and that you mentioned that your car ran but seller said there are some minor carb issues. Could’ve just been a coincidence.

March 19, 2009 at 4:20 pm #238371Finally picked up our car from Baltimore. She is a beauty, will post some pics as soon as we get it cleaned up. Thanks for the advice on getting the Volkswagon – Alive manual. Has already paid for itself. The carb issue, well it was the carb itself so installing a new one tomorrow. A few other minor (I hope) projects and she will hum. Have driven it around town a bit and it definetly has turned some heads. Thanks again to all who answered my questions. This is turning out to be a lot more fun than I had imagined.

May 21, 2009 at 4:32 pm #238373Hi to all,
It has been sometime since visiting the site, just been to busy. Still working on the engine (VW). I have fixed the problems with the carb, just put a new one on, amazing it worked! Then found out we had to put a new alternator in. What a job that was, but had fun doing it. I can actually get it to start now without a jump and it seems to idle fine (about 1100 rpms) in nuetral. Having one more problem, hope someone can help out. I checked my idiots manual and couldn’t find the answer. The engine, like I said idles fine in nuetral. When I shift into gear though the rpm’s drop to around 400 and it starts to stall. I had the timing, points etc all set and I did a slight adjustment on the carb idle screw. Still wants to stall out. Any suggestions would really be appreciated.
Wanted to say to that Peggy and I went to the Replica Kit car show in Carlisle. We only had one day to walk around but saw some very interesting cars. We were a bit dissapointed we didn’t see more TD’s TF’s and the like, but we did talk to a few people who had TDs there. Was glad the weather held off and all in all we had a good time. Even talked about taking ours next year (fingers crossed).
Thanks again to anyone who can help out the with the idle problem.
Steve and Peggy.
May 22, 2009 at 11:33 am #238374Steve & Peggy,
Jsut want ot make sure we have the scenario correct, with foot off the gas, you push the clutch in and put it in gear. Without doing anything else, the engine idle drops. Right?
And grinding when you put it in gear? At first blush, it sounds like the clutch is not fully engaged. It’s engaged enough that you can put it in gear, but once in gear, there is enough drag that the engine stalls.
This sound reasonable to anyone out there?
If it does, first thing I’d check is the clutch cable. Any slack? Cable might not be adjusted right and the slack is preventing the clutch from fully engaging.

That scenario gets my vote.

May 22, 2009 at 2:49 pm #238376Like all diagnosing…start with the easy stuff. Hopefully you hit it!
And get to stay away from stuff like the clutch itself is slipping.
Good luck S&P

May 22, 2009 at 6:04 pm #238377Thanks for the suggestion about the clutch. Even though it is an automatic stick will check that first. Was able to figure out some other problems. A mechanic friend of my son looked at it and helped with the carb install. He also set the timing and points etc. After rechecking them today, and looking at my “idiots” manual, found that he had set the points to almost nothing so I had to open those and then the timing was set to 7.5 deg ATDC, should have been 7.5 BTDC. So got that corrected. But with everything still having fun working on it. Actually drove it around town last night and it really turned a lot of heads. Took some pics of it and will try to get them downloaded soon.
Thanks again for all help.
