Even in cars that only weigh about 1800 to 1900 pounds, you don’t want a 1200.
The other downside to the early VWs is the rear swing axles that you mentioned. You want a later chassis with the independent rear suspension.

About ten years ago, I had a ’65 Plymouth shipped from California to NJ. It cost about $1,200 for transport on an open car carrier. Closed transport was far more expensive.
So $1,500 now is probably on target.
Of course you could always drive it home. 🙂

When you do your road test, bring along a couple spare filters and the tools to change them.It sounds like crud in your gas tank finding it’s way through. Thank goodness for the filters!If it happens a couple times, you may want to pull the tank and have it cleaned.

Not so fast….
Adjusting the VW’s valves is really easy. And since it should be done every 3,000 miles or so, it’s a money saver if you learn to do it yourself.
