Stefan,
First, let’s find out what your actual gas mileage is. We’d be able to offer better opinions.
Meanwhile … I had a VW based TDr with a dual port, dual carb, 1776cc engine. Normal mixed local/highway use was a little over 20 mpg.

November 18, 2024 at 4:06 pm #309212Rene, you can determine the year of the donor VW using this chart

Don’t think I can help with determining the year of your kit.

November 17, 2024 at 9:11 pm #309211@renet Rene, that is exactly what I was referring to. Some states would use the VIN of the donor car as the VIN for the completed replica, other states would assign a new VIN.

November 17, 2024 at 5:09 pm #309208@renet, yes. The number stamped into the VW tunnel is the VIN for your VW donor car.
It may have been used as the VIN for the MG replica. But that varies by state.

October 4, 2024 at 5:57 pm #309178FYI – I have not updated the master list for several years. My bad. I just copied all the new member info and took it off line. It takes a lot of manual editing to get it into the right format for the initial post. I’ll be working on that and will update the master list.

October 4, 2024 at 5:26 pm #309104Valuation questions are very difficult to answer, as you might have guessed by the lack of responses to your post.
I have seen folks asking $15k and even higher. I think that’s unreasonable. You can get a fairly clean, drivable original TD for that money.
For a clean, running TDr, $5 to $10k seems to be in the ballpark. But it better be a very nice car to get $10k or to cross over that line.
On the low end, I’ve seen drivable cars with asking prices of only a few thousand.
Do I wish for all of you that prices were higher? Of Course! I simply don’t see it right now.
The above are my opinions, having been around these cars since 1981. Others may disagree. But at least I tried to answer. 🙂

Welcome!
You need a early VW bus speedometer cable. They are approx 6 feet 9 inches
Here’s one for ‘60-‘67:
‘68-‘74 bus cable is 8 feet:

August 27, 2024 at 1:42 pm #309034James, $5,500 is a good price for a clean TDr.
I see a lot of ads in the $15k range. You can find clean original TDs for that price. And while I wish it were so, I stand by my opinion that these are not fifteen thousand dollar cars.
The eBay post Mark shared ended with no sale. Of course, that could mean the dealer sold it outside of eBay.

July 22, 2024 at 6:45 pm #308963Dale,
This isn’t going to directly answer your question…but…
Shocks should not be used to level a car or adjust ride height. The earlier term for shocks (dampers) is far more descriptive of their sole purpose. They control rebound, when your suspension is compressed.
If the car is not sitting level, there must be some other issue going on. Difficult to diagnose that here.
That said, anyone who grew up in the sixties or seventies muscle car era, knows that air shocks were used to lift the rear. But gave a hard ride. And no, I’m not recommending you add air shocks to your TDr. You won’t be happy! Amusing aside, a prior owner of my 1965 Plymouth Satellite added air shocks to “solve” a sagging rear end of the car. The real issue was 60 year old leaf springs that were far beyond their normal life. Replaced the leaf springs, went back to stock replacement shocks, and the car rides like she was new.

July 22, 2024 at 6:38 pm #308960Stephen,
How to describe sound with words… how about enhanced VW? Slightly louder than a stock VW, but a much nicer sound. Certainly not overbearing. Not sure it factors into your equation, but more info better than less … this was on a 1776 VW engine.
Top down, just a nice burble from the rear. Top up, seems the roof acts like a megaphone, and engine noise (not exhaust noise) rises considerably.
All that said, if it’s an original look you’re going for, Ed’s recommendation is a good one!

July 3, 2024 at 4:33 pm #308914Should be ok. I lifted my TDr, with the floor rack under that junction point, without the four-by-four. But please, don’t do any work on the car that way! Jack stands under the rear torsion tubes please. 🙂

I’m trying to help a person in Lancaster sell an almost completed VW based TD. She is asking $4,000. But I believe will take resonable offers. The car is in Lancaster Pennsylvania.
Send me your email and I will send pics.
I was about tp post it in the classifieds. But figure I’d give you a first shot.

June 30, 2024 at 8:12 am #308895Mike,
Is your new radio a DIN mount unit?
You need a universal mounting bracket like the one below, and will probably have to fabricate a simple bracket to support the rear, which you can tie into the firewall.

June 3, 2024 at 11:51 am #308866There are many sources for VW banjo steering wheels. Just Google that phrase.
You should need an adaptor if your TDr has a VW steering column.
A word of caution, measure carefully. Most VW wheels are over 15 inch diameter. Make sure you have the lap and leg room.
The included adaptors vary by year of the VW.
Here’s one example to get you started:

April 18, 2024 at 11:06 pm #308832Ditto what Ed said.
I had a wooden shifter knob with the correct pattern for a VW. But that was my choice.
reality is it was rarely oriented correctly. The entire shifter tends to turn in the socket that connects it to the shift rod in the tunnel.

April 18, 2024 at 11:03 pm #308831Stefan,
You mentioned being unsure about the year of your VW donor.
The VW VIN is stamped into the center tunnel, right next to the access panel for the shift rod to transaxle coupling (under you seat!)
Once you have the VIN, look it up here: https://www.thesamba.com/vw/archives/info/bugchassisdating.php
As the engine may not have come from the original Beetle, and because engine changes were often made midstream during a model year, you also want to check the engine number. It is stamped into the engine block, just under the generator stand. You can look up engines here: https://www.thesamba.com/vw/archives/info/engine_letters.php

April 18, 2024 at 10:58 pm #308830Stefan,
Kit part supplies are limited. Body parts almost non-existent. Various trim and roof/side curtains for FiberFab cars are available from MG Magic. https://mgmagicclassicmotorparts.com/
Some trim pieces are reproduction TD parts. Headlight shells, door handles, stuff like that. Moss Motors is a good place to turn. https://mossmotors.com/
For the VW mechanical stuff, there are plenty of sources. A quick search will turn up multiple sources for almost anything you could need.
Always feel free to check in here before you buy anything, particularly if you are unsure if a particular part is correct for your car.
