Thanks for posting for me Paul ( never quite got the hang of it ).Thanks for the kind comments on the rack. It looks nice with the wood dash in the background. In hindsight I would make it a little smaller but works well. Easy to install and remove. Bolted in the wheel nuts of the spare.

Nice, Vinny. That looks like a clean MiGi for $3500, which is about right for a decent one in running kit. I’m not so sure about Jaguar SS100 replica prices. I’d guess they’d be a few bucks more just on the basis of material used.
It is not without precedent that a person of your profession would go a full career and not be car crazed. It happens… -

Right you are, sir. Not sure how that happened.

I like this Vinny guy already. Level-headed.
Good luck on the Jag kit. My guess is it’s an XK-120 with Ford running gear. Is it?I kind of want one of those; I think they could be made very nice with a later v-6, five-speed and some properly-sized (15 or 16-inch, not the 14s they usually sport) knock-off wire wheels, powdered gray. But even the… -

Sorry to hear it Vinny, but if you stick around here a bit you’ll likely get line on another one before long. Hope you do.

I’ve been doing a bit more research on this subject.See: http://www.volkswebbin.net/topic/79132/distributors-and-number-3-cylinder-retard/Seems that distributors manufactured with the doghouse (1971 and later) do not have this #3 retard feature since the oil cooler had been removed from the air path to #3 cylinder.

Tks Ed, after Carlisle, I’ll splurge for $8 and experiment with the shims.
-
edward ericson replied to the topic MGTD Kit car suspension in the forum VW Based Kits 10 years, 11 months ago
I’ve got a set of shims on my car and my ride height is close to stock. Maybe an inch low all around. The rap on these is that they do no harm, particularly on cars, such as ours, with extra-light noses. The “harm” suffered with too much positive caster is harder steering action in parking lots and such.
The benefit is a more stable line at highway… -
Royal replied to the topic MGTD Kit car suspension in the forum VW Based Kits 10 years, 11 months ago
Ed, seems you are often extolling the virtues of caster shims. Unless you drop the front of the vehicle isn’t this a relatively fixed amount? As I understand it, if your frame is level, then the factory, no shims, should be correct. Aren’t these shims to correct alignment when using a radical nose down modification?Wow, the posts here are rea…[Read more]

You should get it aligned. The Muir book has a quick and dirty toe-in check though. Maybe do that procedure first–it’s free– then try my handy home camber adjustment:Car on a level surface, wheels straight, pull the hubcaps and put a good straight edge on the wheel ridge (not the bumps that hold the hubcap). Put a level on the straight edge. You…[Read more]

Hey would having the disty out 90 degrees mess with that slightly retarded #3 timing the VW people engineered in? Or does the 009 lack that feature?
And BTW, wasn’t the 009 made for dual carb setups where a good vacuum was not convenient to get? Seems like a good SVDA disty hooked to the 32/36 vacuum port would be the way to get the timing advance… -

The synopsis: Your front end will not drift or blow around, even if it is light, if you set up the suspension properly. To do that:
1. Take apart the beam and remove all of the small torsion leaves. Reassemble with adjusters welded in where the grub screws go in the middle. (or buy a ready-made adjustable beam)2. Buy a set of caster shims. Install… -

Or you will find a lot more discussion in the post “Need advice on ride height” from a few years back. Search it, I wasn’t able to link.

I think that you will find that it is not a fluid coupling. Rather, the cable turns a magnetic rotor which influences the stator and drags it around against spring pressure resistance. The faster you go, the further the stator is rotated. Voila!, a speed indicator – speedometer.

Cam and higher compression, are my guesses. This is an engine owned by a person who knows how to set static timing, right? So if it’s right for a stock engine–and 28 btdc at 3000 is right–then the timing ain’t the issue. We don’t know how stock it is though. A short duration, high lift cam (or ratio rockers) could raise the comp ratio into the…[Read more]
