With only a 20% chance of rain we started out for Cherokee N.C.a little cloudy in Gatlinburg Tn. halfway up the smokies RAIN just a drizzle at firstwe put the top up just in time . side curtains” na– we won’t need them” , at that time all the rain in the world came down !!! I pulled over found a tree– curtains on now !! even with all the drafts it was still a hot stuffy ride now the sun is out– gave away all my money–to Harries ..the same thing on the way home –Rain ,Rain, Sun, Sun, not a drop at my house!! My wife and I figure we need to gain 100lbs each if we want to keep the back end from fish tailing on turns, but it was a trip we will joke about for a long time ,at least the wipers work.

When I grew up in Knoxville, I loved Cherokee. To show my age, Gatlinburg was a fraction of what it is today. I remember two little diners, one close to the park entrance on the right side that was very good, a few motels and a handful of shops. A sleepy little town. Today is a different story indeed. Since I don’t drive my car in the rain, I hadn’t given it much thought about fish tailing. The car is very light on the rear and with such a small fuel tank you can’t add much more weight from fuel. I don’t have any fresh air intake so even with air leaks, I imagine it was a stuffy ride. I think while my car is apart, I may engineer an air duct to the front of the car for fresh air with a damper to close it off. Thanks for sharing about your trip, got me to thinking on both car and good memories. By the way, if you and your wife gain so much weight, you’ll not be fitting into the car. , maybe just do some heavy luggage…..my wife can give lessons!

September 7, 2009 at 10:50 am #239678The absolute worst rain I have ever driven in was in my MG. At night!
I was on my way home from a kit car gathering in Cincinnati. About the only thing I could see were the taillights on the truck in front of me as we crept along. But I figured I was better off moving than sitting on the side of the road.
Car was a bit stuffy. But I kept the defroster fan going to move some air around. And stayed amazingly dry! Some drips through the seams on on the roof. But that was about it.
