First of all I’m happy to find this page, good to meet ya’ll. I picked up this daytona migi on the side of the road last fall. After I got it home and before I had got around to filing the title the rear left axel seized and in the prossess of fixing it found out the vin# on the title and floor pan didn’t match. Long story short I’m now in the prossess of changing the body to a new floor pan. An advice would be welcome. Thanks Duk
January 31, 2011 at 10:26 am #243571Hi and welcome to the forum.
It’s basicly taking a good look to determine what will come off with the body and what will stay on the pan and then disconnecting the wires and cables and anything else that runs from the body to the pan, along with a large number of bolts. The assembly manuals [in the aqua section ],may help, just reverse the process.
Check out a post in the general discussion section on page 1 near the bottom for a listing of the title and registration regulations in each state. It may save you a bunch of trouble in the long run.
January 31, 2011 at 8:15 pm #243572I will check it out problem I have is my title vin matches nothing story is it matched old pan that rusted out vin on current pan is already registered to a vw in different city and it does match windshield strip vin of that vw and is same as my pan vin. In other words they have at least part of the body off of my pan.
January 31, 2011 at 8:54 pm #243573Hey Duk, I am doing the same thing to “Herbie” (Classic Roadster 53 MGTD) that I originally built in 1985. I am doing a body off frame, total restoration, including new floor pans, brakes, fuel and brake line, all new. The best info I can give you, is to buy a good quality set of full floor pans. Do not get lured into buying the cheap Brazil stuff. Do a google search for VW Floor pans, Voksberg West, comes to mind for good sheet metal. Good Luck, I will try and post some pics of Herbies restoration.

Broke down and never had it fixed because they didn’t like it. Motor is free, and bet I can make it run, I hope, its a fuelinjected suitcase and theres a complete disk brakes if nothing else useful comes from it.
January 31, 2011 at 9:31 pm #243575Hi Duk, Thanks for the pictures!!. Your car is the first I’ve seen with sidemount spares. We had a discussion here last week and several of us decided it would not work because of space limitations but your pictures prove us wrong.I guess it goes to show that us ”experts self proclaimed” don’t know it all after all.
Best of luck with your project.
January 31, 2011 at 9:36 pm #243576LOL The forum over the side tires was what finally got me off my backside and to go ahead and get signed in here. I’ve been keeping up with reading different forums for close to 4 months.
January 31, 2011 at 11:04 pm #243577That is pretty amazing that we debate it to death, and along comes justduky who actually did the side-mounts!
I was one of those that thought the side mounts would not work. Shows how much we know!

February 1, 2011 at 6:53 am #243579Welcome to the group justducky. Your TD looks mighty fine. I was the one who started the thread on the side spare and was wondering how one would look and it works.
As for the VIN, VW located the VIN in three (sometimes two) places. One VIN tag in the front trunk, one stamped in a dash plate (later models, and the most important one is the one stamped into the Tunnel just forward of the shift coupler access panel. You can change floor pans every day but that doesn’t change the VIN. The only way the VIN would change is to change to a different chassis.
Good luck on your restoration and keep us all posted.

Allen is correct…changing floor pans would not change the VIN.
Just wondering…is your car titled as the VW donor car?

February 1, 2011 at 12:29 pm #243581Yes it’s titled as a 70 VW, and at least at one time it sitting on a floor pan. FYI; the VW people tha I have had contact with around here commonly refer to the complete rolling undercarrage is refered to as the floor pan, the floor boards then being the parts on either side of the tunnel. The only vin# I have to work with is the one stamped on the tunnel. The one on the tunnel that was under the car when I got it is a 9didget 66 VW. This number is titled to VW the other side of stillwater to a car that has been rebuilt using the body.
February 1, 2011 at 1:27 pm #243582Welcome Duk – I have a lot of relatives out you way in Enid and close by – spent some fun times as a kid out there in the country.
Well – I say the guy on the other side of Stillwater owes you the title – the one he has goes w/ the tunnel that you have w/ your car. He needs the title from the tunnel that his body now rests on… imho
Not the most legal way, but… you could just get the title from a old VW and weld in the matching VIN on your car tunnel from that old car – been done before. I still say the other title belongs to you.

Depending on what state you are in, being titled as the “donor” car will not fly. Where are you located?
