    Saw an XK 120 and that was it: had to have a life full of sports cars. Flipped his MG in a 1955 race, figured everything after that was gravy. Handed expensive-car keys to P.J. O’Rourke. Learned to write ad copy from Elmore Leonard.

    He was one of us.

    At the 2010 Amelia Island Concours, I spent a delightful 20 minutes with Mr. Davis, just the two of us, wandering around the cars consigned to the auction. He was able to talk about every car we stopped at.

    One of those chance encounters that made for a memorable experience!
