Hello all, I am new to the MG world I purchased a Modern Classic model built in the early 80’s. The history of this car is as follows. It was purchased as a running rolling car by an older couple. After th man died the lady put it inot storage and forgot about it. She died some years later and the storage unit was auctioned off with all the contents from estate sale to estate sale. It was finnaly revived buy a lady in Ft. Worth, Texas when she found it in storage. At that time after 20 years everthing was locked down tight. She had it restored with a few upgrades to the suspension and brakes. She then showed it at a few car shows and won several events. It was then sold to the privous owner who took it off the show room and started to drive it as a daily fair weather driver. I purchased it thursday of last week, some 4 1/2 yeasrs after being found in a storage unit. The gelcoat has oxidized and will need to be reworked. Some of the crome will need to be replaced, and other parts will need some TLC. I have been online looking for help finding parts for a week. Through google search I have found myself reading posts from this forum several time. I thought I would join to see if I can get some hints as to what, where, when adn how to get this car back to the showroom.
I have a car show tomorrow that I am going to enter it in as a “in progress.” Given I am starting from a once trophy car I hope to be able to make it better. It is a VW powerplant, but unknown actual type because it does not have a serial number on the block. best guess is a 74 Ghia rear end and VW bus steering and front clip. I am going to go through the entire car from front to back to find out what I have under the skirts and then I will plan the restoration of my replica.
I do have one item that has already confused me. The top. I purchased one from Moss motors and placed it on the car without installing the snaps to see if it was going to fit. after taking some measurements and trying to streatch the material I came to the conclusion not to install it and send it back. I am still waiting to see if I get a full refund. The car has a 3 bow top that has a wood front piece and attaches to the wind shield with 2 pins and thumbscrews. The top that was on it was torn and missing the entire middle, from the windshield to the last bow. I have what was left of it in my garage. I will post pics tomorrow after the show as I am going to take more pics there. Will have more detail about the top then too.
Thanks for the posts they have already helped me. I hope to talk to some of you through questions and answers later.
May 14, 2011 at 6:07 am #244506If the top has 3 bows it may be that you have a top based on a 1953 MGTD. The tops for the earlier models wouldn’t fit as they were all 2 bow tops. Many of the replicas used tops that were made specifically for them. MG Magic is a good source for some of them. The cockpit was lengthened on many of the replicas, so a “real” MG top won’t fit.
May 14, 2011 at 8:05 am #244507Pins in the windshield sounds like the BCW style. Also the MG style. If you take your old top, and the car, to an auto upholstery and top shop they will make you a new one. Boat top guys have allegedly been used as well.
Good luck. And please post photos. Use that “up arrow with tree” button at the right upper corner of the “Post Reply” window.
Look forward to seeing your find.

I agree with Ed. If there are pins at the top corners of the windshield frame, it is very likely your car uses a reproduction MG roof.
I’m not familiar with Modern Classic. I look forward to seeing pics of you car!

May 16, 2011 at 2:36 pm #244511Definately a 53 3 bow top. I was surprised to see the rear fenders molded as part of the body. According to Brad at MG Magic, there were several small manufacturers that made from one prototype to a dozen or so production models before fading away. Really neat car.
May 16, 2011 at 4:38 pm #244512Great looking car. Looks like a real chrome windshield frame that folds down, and either a stright-up ’53 top mechanism or a very nice reproduction. Looks like your hood opens similar to my BCW, with hinges on the drivers side and a latch on the passenger side, all hidden. Very slick.
Drive on up to Carlisle, I say!

Would a ’53 3 Bow top from an original MG like from Moss fit? Is it longer than a ’52?

Yes it is a chrome windshield complete with pitting from not being taken care of like it should be. It does fold and the hinge for the hood is on the drivers side.
I am looking to fix the gelcoat. Any suggestions?
May 16, 2011 at 6:31 pm #244514Check out this link. There are some suggestions on bringing gelcoat back to life. Check out my photo gallery pga64. I show pics of before and after.

May 16, 2011 at 6:53 pm #244515Good looking car!! It’s got a lot of original MG features, very authentic.
It’s very difficult to get gelcoat to shine like quality paint but it is a very longlasting and tough finish. Try the products designed for fiberglass boats which are available at any marine dealer.
I like the vertical E-brake lever.
May 17, 2011 at 7:51 am #244516I can’t tell you if it will fit, but the 3 bow 53 top is a little longer. The extra bow gives you more headroom and you need a little longer top to go over the third bow. The only sure way to tell is to find someone with an original 53 TD and compare measurements. Check to see if there is a British Sports Car Club in your area as a start in finding one.
May 17, 2011 at 1:05 pm #244517I don’t understand. You appear to already have a good top bow system–much more realistic looking than most of ours. What would you need with a different one?
As far as the canvas, check your PN from that & see if you ordered the two-bow model. That could be your trouble right there.
If it was a 3-bow you sent back you could bring the car to a top shop & have ’em do you up. Just bring the remnants of the old one & tell ’em what happened with the Moss piece. You’ll be cruisin’ shady in no time.

May 17, 2011 at 4:42 pm #244518I am not going to replace the frame I need to replace the canvas. The previous owner was traveling from Sweetwater, TX to Dallas, TX and the middle of the canvas (from stiching to stiching, windshield to floating bow) let go. I do have what is left of the old one still and will look to find a vendor that can create and install a new one.
May 17, 2011 at 4:45 pm #244519The pic is of the top I purchased from Moss and tried to hold it in place to see if it would fit. I didnt think so after taking some measurements and holding it in place. It looked a little short. The part number I was sent is 243-745.
May 17, 2011 at 7:37 pm #244520That’d be the three-bow model.
FYI, I’m especially interested in this because i picked up a two-bow frame to try to adapt to my car, when i’ve got spare time. Looks like the seat back needs to be narrowed just a little for that as well.
Nothing’s easy.
