Anyone know where I can find a hardtop for a CMC/fiberfab kit? I have been looking for quite a while and am not having any luck.

A hard top is sacrilege, isn’t it?

I’ve seen removable hardtops for A’s and B’s, but not T’s.

Was one made? It’s not in any of my books.

Look in oldfartfighter’s photo gallery to see pictures of a TDreplica with a hard top. I saw one on E-bay a few months ago that was more rounded in the back but did not have quarter windows.I also remember seeing a Classic Roadster Duchess brochere with yet another style but I have never seen an actual top in person.

I know they were a factory option on the Lafer, and almost made an offer on one for sale in Norman, Okla., awhile back. But it was white, and I finally decided it wouldn’t get all that much use down here. Maybe a boat shop could make one?

I fail to see the need for a hard top on a convertible.  I know the current retractable hard top on a Mazda Miata is popular, but a roadster is supposed to be a convertible, not a coupe.

As the slogan on a poplular Honda S2000 tee shirt and window decal says, top down in any weather except a huricane (or maybe when it is 115F outside).

Why not take measurements off the cloth top and build it out of red oak and 1/4-inch marine plywood & then glass & spray the outside? Fun fall project.

Only problem is, then you’ll be looking for those fancy-pants “roll up” windows. I don’t know where it all ends. . . .

I am going to create  one out of an aluminum frame and fiberglass. Will take pictures if I ever get it finished.

A hardtop that looks like a convertible top would be the cat’s meow.

BDriver, I’ve been thinking of that.  What if you totally masked (wrapped) your car except for the top, and then laid saran wrap or something over the top and then fiberglassed over the top?  Could you then carefully peel the fiberglass off and then glass some stiffeners in from the bottom?  We need a good fiberglass guy (which I am not) to show us how to do it.  I’d be afraid that, unbeknownst to me, the resin eats saran wrap and I would ruin my otherwise beautiful auto.

I have a thought,, kinda what you are thinking Roy fiber glass over A top masking it with shipping wrap it is thicker than than what you get at walmart and you can get fiber glass panels to keep it light ,or cloth and resin trying  on a piece of wrap first to see if it eats the wrap I don’t think it would good luck  BDriver and let us know   Dan

The fiberglass resin will eat up and kind of absorb the plastics, I even tried Visqueen, it is very heavy plastic used in construction. The resin is potent stuff. I think I will go with the fiberglass paneds and a square tube aluminum frame. That way I can put some sound proofing in the void. I also have a bunch of vinyl I bought at an auction, I got a deal 50 rolls for $10. Abouty 250 feet by 4 feet on each roll. I am thinking of putting that on the outside, like the 70’s cars had. May even put some 57 t-bird port holes on it. I can curve the edges by using different sizes of PVC. I think I am also going to make a fuel tank that sits dow in the wasted space in the very front. That way I may be able to get 1 suit case in the front.

Classic Roadsters Duchess uses that approach for the fuel tank. It sits on the VW pan, passenger side. Allows for a full trunk, about 14 or 15 inches deep, essentially the length and width of the hood.

When it’s 25 degrees out, what’s wrong with a parka and a full face helmet?

James, Good to have you back  !!  I enjoyed the hard top link. I did not know that they were fitted  to the car using the quarter window attachment  points. I  wonder  why they did not make them with quarter windows?  Sure would have helped the visibility.

Thanks Larry, good to be back…..and with a computer. Look at the home page on that link.

    Whata garage
Having those windows really would help. I don’t know how accurate the replicas are in relation to the original tub of the TD. To the eye, they look the same. Don’t know about a hardtop fit between the two. Maybe Bill has the right idea, parka and helmet.
On my other ride, the removable hardtop is fabulous, and it has portholes on the sides that I don’t use for viewing. It is very nice in the winter, but that car has roll-up glass also.

Have a look at this one! It’s here in Alberta ( or maybe BC now) I’ll have to go see it in person!

It’s an original though, not a replica

Eddy.  To my eye, that is the perfect TD hardtop.  Beautiful, functional without destroying visibility, and removable .

    Thanks.

The whole car reminds me of the bobber phase motorcycles went through in the 50’s. Overall, a very nice effect.
