58* + lots of sun = 2 hr drive in the country. Life is good
November 6, 2011 at 8:23 pm #247662Nice.
I drove Bridget to the grocery store to pick up some lettuce. There was one perfect tomato left from the garden and I wanted a final BLT of the season.
Guy walks over to the car as I’m leaving. “I want that car,” he says. “How much would you sell it for?”
“Well,” I said, “since there’s no ‘for sale’ sign on it and you’re coming to me, how ‘about you make an offer? What do you suppose you’d like to pay?”
“I don’t know,” the guy says. “How about $40,000?”
“Sold!” said I. “Show me the money.”
“Really?”
“Hell yes,” I said.
“I thought you’d say $100,000.”
I started her up, blipped the throttle to let him know what powers her. We talked a minute. I told him I heard of a guy not far from here who was talking about selling one like it. Told him he should be looking to spend more like $4,000.
He seemed genuinely surprised.
“You don’t want to sell that one,” he asked.
“Not really,” said. “But you come to me with $40,000, I won’t even haggle.”
November 9, 2011 at 10:58 am #247663Great post Ed. I especially like the show me the money comment.
I had a guy at the Cruisin The Coast event ask me how much I paid for Winston. When I didn’t say he asked $60K. I said with a smile. “No, but if you’re in the market I’d certainly consider $60K as a good starting figure. He smiled back!
November 9, 2011 at 1:00 pm #247664I took my Honda S2000 on a run with a group of Miata owners this weekend. We made a Poker run of it, stopping at historic places in the more rural county next door for new cards, and ended up at a casino for the buffet lunch. I got to take advantage of being a first time enrollee for their players club, which gave me instant credit to cover the buffet lunch and $15 in credit for the slot machines. I ended up with $20.00 in cash, a free lunch and a nice sunny, cool day with the top town.
If I do this ride again, I’ll be tempted to take one of my TD replicas, but they do drive some sections rather spirited, so I might have to play catch up.
November 9, 2011 at 1:51 pm #247665Wow, if someone offered me $40,000 for one of my TD replicas, I surely be tempted to sell. I wonder when the 2000 TD will be available in the USA and how much it will go for?
November 9, 2011 at 5:03 pm #247666Is the TD2000 still being made? I read somewhere that the original company in Australia was bought out by a Malaysian outfit, but haven’t seen anything since.

They have a car in for testing to US standards and hope to have one in the next year if not sooner.
November 9, 2011 at 7:26 pm #247668Most impressive photo on the TD-2000 site, captioned as a 1986 crash test. No mention of the speed.
As they say on Mythbusters, “Don’t try this at home.”

November 9, 2011 at 8:42 pm #247669Is that the steering shaft sticking through the center of the steering wheel and into the rear area? If so, talk about getting skewered! newkitman40856.9132175926

"If one thing matters, everything matters" - from the book The ShackNovember 9, 2011 at 10:10 pm #247670Can’t tell what it is. But it’s hard to believe it is the steering column.
The front end is not collapsed enough to drive the column back through the passenger compartment.
And as a practical matter, if the column DID protrude back like that, you can bet your last dollar someone at TD-2000 would have said, “No way you are putting that photo on the web site.”

November 9, 2011 at 10:37 pm #247671It might be the actuator that was used to steer the car during the crash test.
November 10, 2011 at 12:02 am #247672Well, it’s all moot to me anyway. Couldn’t afford one even if they were street legal here.

On the Japanese TD-2000 site ( http://www.td2000.jp/ ) the list price for the base car with a 5spd trans is 4,599,000 yen.
At this morning’s conversion rate, that is $59,250 USD.
Add another 270,900 yen ($3,490 USD) for the rollbar, luggage rack, moto-lita steering wheel and leather interior.

November 10, 2011 at 10:11 am #247675Moto Lita? Thought the thing had air bags.
Love me some air bags. But love me some shiny wood-rimmed three-spoke steering wheel more.
At least until I hit something head-on, hard.
November 10, 2011 at 11:21 am #247676Nope…no where are air bags mentioned.

November 10, 2011 at 1:01 pm #247677I’m sorry, but for 60 grand I could buy and fix up a whole FLEET of TD replicas, rent a garage to store them in, and have enough left over to replace the tailgate and back bumper on my 2000 Ranger XLT.
Or, take my wife to Europe for a few weeks.

"If one thing matters, everything matters" - from the book The ShackNovember 10, 2011 at 6:04 pm #247680I’d most likely forget which side of the road to drive on and end up needing an MD more than a TD.

They drive on the right (that is the CORRECT) side of the road on the continent and in the Scandinavian countries.
