Obviously there’s too much spam getting through. The other forums
that I belong to that rarely, if ever, get spam and fake memberships
require new user approval before any posting is allowed.
Can this site be upgraded to that type of security?
February 4, 2012 at 5:29 pm #248948I’ve spoken with the company that provides the hosting service and contracts for the forum software.
Short answer is no.
Remember, our founder FranieD set us up here. His brother Jeff works for the hosting firm. If we want to stay here, we are committed to this software. Ya’ll think I am an uber-admin here, but really I only have admin rights to manage members (delete, block specific users, password resets, etc). I can manage posts too (move, delete, etc). And I can block IP addresses and emails.
When I see a run from one IP address, I do block that address.
The anti-spam settings are at their strictest, with one exception. We have it set so that you can post a maximum of five posts in a ten minute period. I could lengthen that time period, bit I think it would inconvenience the real members.
The forum software does not have a setting for pre-approval of new users. Once a registration us made, the user id is live.
Every now and then you see a small run of spam, like today. When I logged on this afternoon, there were a half dozen or so.
But….we actually get an average of three dozen spam users registering each day. And, as you can see, our anti-spam settings prevent the vast majority from posting anything.
I delete those addresses on a regular basis. And usually I am on-line, deleting spam posts before just about anyone sees them. (Watch it folks, I’m often lurking here!!!). The past two days, I’ve been away with no internet access. So you got to see the junk before I did.
I know it can be annoying. But I try to keep the junk to a minimum.

February 4, 2012 at 5:43 pm #248949Paul, I’ve been in your shoes and didn’t like them. I get far more junk and spam in my own personal email account than through this site. Great job. Thanks.
February 4, 2012 at 5:47 pm #248950Paul …its easy to see the spam .I just ignore it .. This is an awesome site ..thanks for all your dedication and hard work.
February 5, 2012 at 2:15 pm #248951Just a quick follow up,
Last night I deleted 42 user ids that were all from automated spammer/registration systems. And just now I deleted another 22.
For the most part, I think our spam post blocking measures are working. That was 64 “users” in less than 24 hours that were unable to post any spam.

February 6, 2012 at 9:22 pm #248954Paul – You could set up another trusted member or two who you feel are capable to help you, to be able to delete spam if they see it too, before you get to it.
On one of the motorcycle forums I have been on for years, I and 2 other members have been given admin privileges to delete spam and obnoxious posts and bar spammers. This might help you keep this site clean. And thanks for the good job!

February 7, 2012 at 10:01 am #248956Paul,
You’ve been doing an excellent job with the circumstances. I was unaware of the amount of work you are doing for this site and I applaud you for it. Thank you very much for what you do.
I was only trying to offer a suggestion that I’ve seen on other forums, but this site does not have a small army of admins that those others do.
You are doing a fine job. Yes, the spam is generally very easy to spot, and I want to thank you for doing the work required to keep this site at its high level of service and performance.
I’m grateful for people like you how dedicate the time to monitor and maintain a healthy and user-friendly forum for all of us.
February 7, 2012 at 10:54 am #248957There’s many of us always hanging around, checking this site at least once a day if not more. If other members could be allowed to delete and block spam, it would make Paul’s job a lot easier.
