    @royal

I have always loved wire wheels with all their inherent maintenance problems and expensive purchase costs (warts and all).

I have been talking with the Dayton Wire Wheel Co. about wire wheels for my/our VW based TDr’s.  Here is the best deal that I could work out:

         For a 5×15″ 70 chromed spoke, 4 wheel deal with 2 eared TD/TF type like spinner/knockoff on a “bolt-on” wheel (4x130mm) with chromed lug nuts.  $475 each.

         For a 20 wheel deal $425 each.

         For a 40 wheel deal $$399 each.

There is a 6-8 week lead time and a 50% deposit is required.

Please note that this is for a bolt on wheel deal, – not splined.

    Is anyone interested?

(It’s more than my retired account can bear.)

It’s a whopping lot of money, true, but if you gotta have wires, these are really nice and if anybody has a better price, I would sure like to know where/how.  It’s true that you can buy used bolt on splined hubs, have them welded and re-drilled to 4x130mm, wrestle with the fit (would the studs interfere with the wheel), and then get regular splined wire wheels but by the time you get the wheels, knock-offs, hubs etc, you’re gonna be in for a lot of money.  I (having had several wire wheeled vehicles) would not recommend buying used wheels or used hubs on-line unless you can see them yourself.  The splines are often worn out and are on the verge of spinning.  If it’s not the wheel itself that needs expensive truing/tuning or for out of round, it’s often the spline either on the wheel or the hub.)

(As an aside: I discovered that for Dayton’s splined wheels, the Dayton splines are not the same as a factory spline.  Although they also sell a factory splined wheel also, they do not carry the factory splined hubs.)

    Good info, Roy.

$2,000–if we can get eight takers. That’s just about way too rich for my blood. At least for now.

I have worked out a fitment scheme and a source for 60-spoke Rudge splined kits of five for about $1200 plus shipping. These are painted Dunlaps, made in India, needing tubes, etc. As you said, by the time you’re all done with these you’d probably be in the $2k range anyway, and the Daytons are almost certainly a better product.

I’ll post my findings here later.

    70 spokes is high.

TD aftermarket wheels would have been 48 or 60 spoke.

Truespoke is another option. I could open up this conversation again:

Well, crap. I can’t find my notes. But this was all recent and my memory is pretty good. So here’s what I found re wire knockoffs to be adapted to the 4-bolt VW:

    1. The most likely candidate for a legit kit that’ll maybe fit is the Triumph TR3/4 hubs with 4.5-inch Dunlop wires.

I found them available at Rimmer Brothers for–here’s the link–about $1010 out the door. Shipping is more and the pound varies against the dollar. But that’s the bottom line, plus or minus $50.

    2. The cheap kit is made-in-India 60-spoke painted Dunlop wires, needing tubes (supplied), hubs, spinners, special short wheel studs, etc.–all come with the kit. They even throw in a knock-off hammer.

    3. Triumph hub adaptors do fit over VW bearing covers. On the front, you’d have to grind the lip off the grease caps–easy and cheap.

    4. getting the bolt circle down to the required 4.5 inches would be doable by a good machine shop. Probably easiest to fill the existing bolt holes and tap new ones, then source shorter-headed lug bolts (or just cut the ones you have down a bit so the heads fit under the new wheels). Alternatively, you could get the shop to install the short lug studs with the kit. I suppose you could eve get your drums made with two lug patterns so you could switch back on no notice if desired. I’m guessing it’d be $50 per hub to do this but really have no idea. Could be half or double that.

    5. The offset of these wheels is about 3/4 inches out. That is, if you,
like me, have stock VW steelies of the 4.5-inch persuasion, which means
zero offset–i.e. the outside of your rim is even with the mounting
flange–then new wires will set about an inch outside of that, allowing
for the thickness of the hub adaptors.

    6. The wider track would require a narrowed beam in my own case. Add another $300 or so & an afternoon’s work. The backs might just fit–but will look a bit “wide.” That’s why I ceased my research. Narrowing front and rear track to fit the wires under the fenders was just more headache than I want to take on. Not to mention expense.

So bottom line guess on this idea is $1200 for wheels kit shipped, $200 machine work, $300 for narrowed beam and another $200 for contingencies, tubes, mounting, etc.–$1900.

Word on the India-made wheels was generally good on the Triumph/MG forums. QC issues from a few years back seem to have been ironed out. But still: these are old tech, and the hubs will spin if you run them hard with a lot of HP. The Dayton high horsepower patterns are a better bet for cars that might be rode hard and out away wet.

Though they’d not be quite as historically accurate, seems like the bolt-on Daytons would be a more sensible solution for us–to the degree that having non-wire wheels can be considered a problem in need of a solution.

For me, if I had $2,000 to blow on this car, I might consider doing a Subaru engine swap before I’d go for wire wheels. Triple the horse power vs looking really cool? No contest.

    From MG Magic’s price list:

Wire Wheel – Real Wire Wheels Set Of 4, Direct Bolt with Spinners, Ford Or Chevy (Chrome) $580.00
Wire Wheel – Real Wire Wheels Set Of 5, Direct Bolt with Spinners, Ford Or Chevy (Chrome) $695.00

A picture of the wheels is about half way down MG Magics home page in the left column. They are a more modern, almost lo-rider style of wire wheel. They are NOT very authentic for our TDs.

And not for nothing…these prices are GREAT…BUT…they are so far out of line with today’s market price, that I wonder about the quality.

The $1,800 to $2,000 seems to be the norm for a set of four. $580? Caveat Emptor!

I am thinking that to put on 5 lug chevy/ford pattern drums and then bolt-on wires would be more elegant and certainly make me feel safer than using adapters on our 4×130 hubs.  If you look at the backside of a 4x130VW hub they can not be easily weld filled and redrilled to Chevy/Ford 5 bolt pattern.

I thought that I once saw undrilled and untapped VW brake drums for sale at one of the VW parts retailers.  I am unable to find them now.  Anybody have a link?

ray10.  Realizing that you just paid a bunch of money for these new wheels, could you give us your opinions of them?  Can you tell who made them and where they were made?  They look like 100+/- spokes?  Roy

So I, being a semi professional eBayer, in an effort to help with his listing, wrote to the guy listing these wheels:

and said “They look like 48 spokers to me”.  To which he responded: “.They are definitely 60 spoke…. I counted them”.  Whatcha gonna do?……Confused

Well, if someone buys those thinking they are 60 spokes, I guess they’ll probably pay him a 20 percent premium on their own bid price too. It’s only fair.

Sometimes you just gotta say “WTF”?

How many of you counted the spokes? I know I did.
Seems to me sixteen sets of three spokes is a total of 48!
    Maybe it’s that “modern math!

The wheels pictured by RAY10 look like the wires that Mel (LovMyTD) put on Mrs Peel awhile back.

Mrs Peel has won quite a few beauty contests so they must look pretty good.
