I picked up what appears to be 1980 fiberform MG TD. its been sitting for the last 10 years. so cleaning out the old gas has been a chore. I am down to the gas tank. which is full of rust. I bought a new tank then realized that the old tank had been modified so the fill neck is on the passenger side. the question is was this the previous owner making the wrong tank work or are they all that way?
September 29, 2015 at 7:31 pm #265596It’s a required part of the build. The FiberFab build manual is in the download section.

If so, like mine, my old tank was apparently for the years ’68-on and the filler had been welded over with a plate (forward, drivers side). Hole was cut for a shortened filler neck put on the passenger side (rearward). The earlier tank, up to ’67, already has the filler neck on the passenger side but still needs cutting down to make the cap very close to the tank. Those original tanks also had vent hoses attached and aren’t used for these kit cars, so be sure to use a vented cap.SoCal Auto Parts web page shows the different tanks (if that’s okay to link to here). And just to point this out, I don’t think the larger 13 gallon tank fits without a modification to the fiberglass base. Not that I would know myself, but it seems to be just like the correct tank except for raising entire top to original filler neck height (that needs cutting down to fit).September 30, 2015 at 1:59 pm #265598Also keep in mind which side your hood is or will be hinged. I would think that it would be troublesome to reach around the fixed side of the hood when fueling.
Ditto on the venting but a vented cap may allow some fume blowback into the cockpit when the tank is full as mine did. Consider an actual vent hose going under the car.Kall2015-09-30 14:02:53September 30, 2015 at 2:13 pm #265599I have a 1983 Fiberfab VW based, with the hood opening up on the passenger side. I recently had the tank replaced using this tank from JBugs: http://www.jbugs.com/product/113201075AB.html?Category_Code=1961-1967-vw-bug-fuel-tanks. The filler neck had to be cut down to two and half inches to fit under the hood.
