Done properly, it’s a weld in procedure. You can also rivet them in and seal the seams, it’s just not as good a fit.

Sorry to say the answer is yes the body will have to be removed. This is because the floor pans come a standard size and will need to be trimmed to fit the individual VW pan. Each pan is slightly different.

I replaced my floor pans but it took awhile to complete my project, as I did a complete frame, engine, body, and new dash wiring, Complete restoration. I built a in garage hoist out of 4×4 timbers, with 1×2 angle support arms. I used a Cable Come a Long from Harbor Freight Tools, to lift the body off. I have some great pics to share, but my iPad will not up load any pictures. You can save lots of money by doing it yourself. Please contact me via site IM, or my private email davearoy@yahoo.com. I will be glad to answer any questions you may have. Be especially careful of marking the front Napolanes Hat support, weld to frame spot and where the rear pan supports weld to the frame. My weld in new pans were 1/2 inch off, which made it a challenge to replace the body back on the chassis. Use a professional Welder, as the pan sheet metal is very thin, and needs good support welds. Also DO NO CUT OFF old pan material, any closer then 1/2 ” to the support center, as you need to lay the inner edge of the pan on top of this 1/2″ flange.
