Mark Hendrickson replied to the topic What type of tow bar? in the forum VW Based Kits 13 years, 11 months ago
That tow bar is not going to work with your front end. You’ll need to rent a tow dolly or enroll in AAA and have it transported via a flatbed roll-back to the mechanic.
Your front end is one of the rare, custom chassis that Larry Murphy mentioned in his previous thread. It is NOT an OEM VW twin beam trail arm style front suspenion. You have an…[Read more] -

Mark,
Definitely not a stock VW front end! And as Larry wrote earlier, you may not be riding on a stock VW floor pan/chassis.
The stock VW tow bar attaches to the lower of the two torsion tubes in the front suspension..
In your picture, we are looking at the “moveable” parts of the suspension. What is just to the left of the image you posted? -

Not wanting to break the bank on a Gene Berg 5 speed for my VW based TD replica. I opted for a Freeway Flyer. I was VERY happy with it. The nearly 500 pound lighter vehicle made the higher 4th gear a joy at highway cruising speeds. Freeway Flyer is a great thing for open road cruising IMHO.
Around town it was not a problem either as 40 mph and…[Read more] -

Thanks, would like to get a cad drawing made up so we can use it to compare. I will look into a cad program I can use at home to model. May be able to look at “refignments” before cutting and wrenching.

edsnova,What should I do to the front end? My car work experience has been limited to oil changes and spark plugs, points and condensers on my old ’67 bug.

Allen,
The plackard I think you are referring to is the electrical components cover. It is stock with the Allison. It’s a smoke colored plexiglas panel with the electrical components labeled on the face and the components tucked away behind it. Just flip the two thumb screws and the cover comes off exposing all the electricals. Great idea t…[Read more] -

Hi Larry,
Thanks for the feedback. I’ll PM Richard. Hopefully he has some additional info. Here’s what I know about the car. To my knowledge the Allison Replicar Ltd company manufactured the MGTD with two options. One with a VW drive train and one with a Nissan drive train. I don’t know if the type with the Nissan drive train ever got off the…[Read more] -

Tom, Richard Wobby here on the forum also has an Allison .He is active here when time allows.Larry, from Florida has a nice red one but he dosen’t post here very often.
Question, Does the Allison top fold down or do you have to remove it . Looking at Larry’s pictures with the frames arround the quarter windows,I can not see how the top could f…[Read more] -

Ed glad you’re okay and that the TD is only marginally marred. It could have been way worse. Like Paul said check the height the scissors jack will get you because not all are the same. I have a VW one for the Ghia and the Toyota scissors jack will raise the Ghia high enough but not sure about the TD. Once assembled I’ll have to give it a check.

Gunfighter you got yourself a beauty there. I know you’re going to ejnoy showing her off while driving around town. In your photos there is a placard in the trunk area of your TD. Is that a standard item with the Allison kit or did you make that? That’s a handy placard to have.

I saw in the Gallery there is a Larry that also has an Allison. Any others out there???
Does anyone know if there are any events, clubs other than this forum or gatherings for MGTD owners anywhere in the country? -

Thanks guys. Would love to get some details on how the car is built. Like what mods, if any, were done to the stock VW chassis and just how the car was put together. I have a couple of the original brochures but they are for the Nissan powered models. Nothing on the VW powered ones. I’ve searched the internet but don’t come up with much on the A…[Read more]

Remember, you’ll need a decent scissor jack.
A VW jack will not work. Without the steel body bolted to the chassis, the stock jack points are not strong enough to lift the car.
And check the lifting range and total height. The first one I bought looked ok, but would not lift the car high enough to get a tire off the ground. - Load More
