Hi Larry,
Thanks for the feedback. I’ll PM Richard. Hopefully he has some additional info. Here’s what I know about the car. To my knowledge the Allison Replicar Ltd company manufactured the MGTD with two options. One with a VW drive train and one with a Nissan drive train. I don’t know if the type with the Nissan drive train ever got off the…[Read more] -

Tom, Richard Wobby here on the forum also has an Allison .He is active here when time allows.Larry, from Florida has a nice red one but he dosen’t post here very often.
Question, Does the Allison top fold down or do you have to remove it . Looking at Larry’s pictures with the frames arround the quarter windows,I can not see how the top could f…[Read more] -

Ed glad you’re okay and that the TD is only marginally marred. It could have been way worse. Like Paul said check the height the scissors jack will get you because not all are the same. I have a VW one for the Ghia and the Toyota scissors jack will raise the Ghia high enough but not sure about the TD. Once assembled I’ll have to give it a check.

Gunfighter you got yourself a beauty there. I know you’re going to ejnoy showing her off while driving around town. In your photos there is a placard in the trunk area of your TD. Is that a standard item with the Allison kit or did you make that? That’s a handy placard to have.

I saw in the Gallery there is a Larry that also has an Allison. Any others out there???
Does anyone know if there are any events, clubs other than this forum or gatherings for MGTD owners anywhere in the country? -

Thanks guys. Would love to get some details on how the car is built. Like what mods, if any, were done to the stock VW chassis and just how the car was put together. I have a couple of the original brochures but they are for the Nissan powered models. Nothing on the VW powered ones. I’ve searched the internet but don’t come up with much on the A…[Read more]

Remember, you’ll need a decent scissor jack.
A VW jack will not work. Without the steel body bolted to the chassis, the stock jack points are not strong enough to lift the car.
And check the lifting range and total height. The first one I bought looked ok, but would not lift the car high enough to get a tire off the ground. -
newkitman replied to the topic VW Freeway Flyer in the forum TD Replicas 13 years, 11 months ago
I have a (sort of) freeway flyer in my 74 Ghia. Gear ratios are great for the freeway but the not as much as the Freeway Flyer. And the RPMs on mine are higher. What I’ve heard mostly is that running a freeway flyer is about the same as a running a power pulley. More HP but lower fan speed. And less fan speed = a hotter engine. I even drive in 3…[Read more]

MGLondonRoadste; Post please post a pic of what doesnt fit. I have a srazy front end as well and would like to make sure I get the correct tow bar. I will be starting on a rewire of all the lights to give it an update and will need to tow it to shop.
Thanks

Lower engine speed only means less heat if there is less load on the
engine. If the load is the same, the heat will increase because of the
fan spinning more slowly. Is this likely to matter much in a TD
replica? I’d think not, unless you’re also loading the nose with iron
barbells and towing a trailer with it. We’re light, so we get some
leeway.…[Read more] -

What’s that song, Ed? Seriously, I’m glad that you are OK mikeeva.. I hate to see a car like that mangled, but it sounds like you might get her fixed up soon. My car didn’t come with a jack, so this is a good reminder for me to look for one to stick in the bonnet.

Paul Mossberg replied to the topic VW Freeway Flyer in the forum TD Replicas 13 years, 11 months ago
I’ve heard good and bad.The biggest downside I have heard is the possibility of running too hot on the highway because of the lower RPM. Remember, the fan speed is directly related to engine speed. Now it would seem lower engine speed, lower heat, which would offset the reduced air flow. But I know guys that will not run a freeway flyer.

Rats, I just paid $60 for a tow bar from someone local by meeting them at a place 1/2 between us. I got it home and it doesn’t fit my front axle. I’ve got rectangular piece of metal to deal with, not a round axle. My axle is too wide for the openings in this tow bar.edsnova, I like the one you linked to, but I don’t think it will fit either.

This is what you want: Bug, Ghia, Thing bar, retails for $80, everywhere. I got mine used for $40. I don’t believe coil-over helper shocks will interfere with it, but they may be a sign you should think about working on the front suspension once you get the spark and fuel squared away.

Look up in the photo gallery at Calafer’s photos. He’s got some great photos of a VW chassis. What’s not standard is disk brakes all around but the photos show the shock setups. His shocks are white and there is no coil spring over the shock. Hope this helps.

MGLondonRoadste replied to the topic What type of tow bar? in the forum VW Based Kits 13 years, 11 months ago
In my view under the driver’s side of the shock, it looks like it just connects to the body or frame. There is a coil around the shock. Is that a coil spring?

Hi Guys,
My car is now listed on EBay http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem& ;item=150612786622
I’ve started in at $3500. If you know of anyone that is looking, this is a very nice car (not as nice as some other members’ cars, but not bad!)
I’d like to see it go to a nice home and I know it has many hours of fun left in…[Read more] -

Unless your London Roadster is one of the rare ones on a custom chassis with coil springs over the shock absorbers, a tow bar for the standard VW beetle should work. The super beetle has strut suspension and requires a different tow bar to hook up.
