Crooks. I bet there’s no law against it either. Only solution would be a lawsuit. And the only lawsuit worth taking for a lawyer is if a person or two died ’cause of the blowout. New congress will be shooting for “tort reform” again to cut down on such profit-diminishing activities.I put new Eagle GTs on my Nova round about 1985. Got an excellent…[Read more]

The dry rotted and nearly new tread depth tires I just removed from my 1974 Beetle were dated 1996 and 1997
I knew they were bad and decided it was too risky to leave them on there.
Working on and off in the tire arena for years, I knew about the date codes. Places that sell a high volume of tires, Sam’s Club, Costco, BJ’s, Tire Rack, etc.…[Read more] -

Thanks Paul,
I’ll get the tires replaced too. I knew I was pushing my luck, just lucky nothing has happened. -

Thanks for that, Paul. I’m still slapping my own forehead over this.

Wind deflector was a TF item. The bottom 6-8 inches was oak wood and locked in behind the seats somehow. Then there was afoot-high strip of 1/4-inch lexan, clear acrylic, or something like it hinged to the wood, so it could fold down when not in use. That ran the width of the car. Holding that in place were aluminum channels the latched in to…[Read more]

I’m never tried nor seen a wind-breaker on a TD.I’m normally a top down guy! But…..On a long highway run, I often put the roof up and keep the side curtains off. This makes a huge difference in the wind buffeting.I also wear a pair of foam racers ear plugs. It’s amazing how much better you feel after a long run if you muffle the engine sound.…[Read more]

You can camp right on the grounds at Carlisle, either in motor home, camper or tent. There are great shower/restroom facilities for the campers.I am not sure if there are RV hook-ups or not. I suspect no.

My wife and I are considering coming from Ky. Might tow it at least part way with our semi-antique motorhome (1984). Does anyone know if their are campgrounds or camping facilities there?

Montie, I’d be interested to hear about your behind-the-seat wind blocker experiences. Thinking of making one after I saw an ebay seller unload his custom-made fold-down TF model for several hundred bucks. In the ad he said it worked well, and the bidding was spirited. Looked like something I could assemble for about $50 in parts–including enough…[Read more]

Ed/Paul,
Thanks for the encouragement, I did a search on google maps, It’s about 422 miles by I-70 approx 7.5 hrs and 488 miles back roads 10.5 hrs…
We stay away from highway speeds mostly due to tires, they look new only about 5000 miles on them but they are over 10 years old. Kinda holdin off replacing them untill I can convert to t…[Read more] -

Gots me one of them there propane dealies.
$120 from Lowes. Gotta crack a window or door to keep from dying of CO, but even in that cavernous space it picks up the inside temp enough for epoxy to cure. Got the beam all together, just filling up the holes in the frame head with some metal before re-installing with the caster shims. Will post that…[Read more]

Me and Mossberg and Wobby and Schu (Schu, right? Or are you going Speedster this year?). That could be four right there. But if we could get 2-3 more TDs those Speedster guys would sh*t. Especially if we bring on a couple righteous Detroit-powered, engine-ahead-of-the-windscreen bruisers. I thought there was a couple other New England-based…[Read more]

Maybe they thought to put the Rabbit motivation out back. I believe some Volk bugs have that swap. Heard that, anyway. Seems like either way, in a TD-looking kit it’d be a lot more work than would make sense.

Granted I was a few years younger, but as I’ve mentioned here before, my TD and I have done round trips NJ to Indianapolis and NJ to Cincinnati. And we’ve been through New England a bunch of times. You can do this Montie.(Of course you can always flat tow it!)

Ed,I saw that in the ad…but do not believe it ever existed. They did have front engine Ford and Chevette cars. And you could fit a V-6 under the hood. But in all my years around Classic Roadsters, I never saw the VW Rabbit drive train in a real car.
