I am sorry i had not put this idea on site before I fixed my seats both with a cheep way we all can get at any Lows or that type of store i used coil springs at the rear of he seat mounted to the floor cutting the seat box at an angle to 0 at the back keeping the front at stock height and still hinged as stock just reinforced with a 1×4 I used 3…[Read more]

I have been pondering the seat question for awhile myself. For a lazy mans solution, I put a stadium seat cushion between me and the seat for an over 30 mile drive (may not be purty, but it helps). I have thought about cutting out the middle section of the seat board leaving about 2″ around the edges. Then taking some chair webbing like the…[Read more]

Glad ya’ll are okay. That’s a good thing about VWs, when they blow, they don’t spray oil on the back tires at 60mph.
And, FWIW, I vote go 1641cc. bigger has to be better, right? -

A rebuild kit for you engine would run you about $800 to $900 if you get a rebuild kit from Mid America Motorworks. That’s where I got my 1641 kit . Didn’t have to machine anything with the case or heads for the 1641. Just did an align/bore.A new crate motor will run you about $1.00 to $1.50 a cc so just for a new, STOCK, 1600 motor will cost you…[Read more]

Rich, That was some kind of a bad deal. Hope you at least got some quality time with Lauren.
Your Allison TD is a rare and special car that is worthy of a quality engine, but I would have to know just how bad the engine is damaged before making a decision. I’m not trying to say patch it up but it may not be as bad as it looks.Pull it out and b…[Read more] -

That IS a bad day ‘s drive
but if it was me I think i would do a new engine at least 1600cc driving a long distance, new is always best , I would do some nice long distance drives , my wife and i always had more fun going on trips with only saddle bags ,on the Harley , but with a TD it would just as much fun
and dryer, a little. That is how we…[Read more]

Rich! Glad you’re OK. Really sorry to hear about Ally. I vote for a rebuild–or go find that guy with the barn full of old VW motors you mentioned a few months back. Haul his junk home. Mix & match.Somehow I just don’t see you dropping $3-$4k on a crate motor. Where’s the fun there?

Here is my solution. My London Roadster has a bench seat with holes cut out under the driver and passenger. After about an hour in the seat I would begin to feel the edge of the hole thru the foam as the area beneath me would sink deeper into the hole in the plywood, I used screws to fasten a piece of sheet metal to the lower side of the b…[Read more]

There are many types of foam out there today. I would certainly look at a two part memory or softer section and a stiffer foundation. They also have some thermal foam that cuts down on sweating and its more breathable. You may spend a little more but could be huge savings on butt powder.

The previous owner of my MiGi cut a big hole in the under-butt board and put a rubber diaphram or strap across the hole to soften the seat a bit. I replaced the board with a solid piece and recovered it and thought that I had improved things until I drove it for a half hour and got a bruised butt. I also didn’t like sitting that much higher.…[Read more]

From Jersy to Cincy? Welllll….just so happens that I lived in Cincy for 10 years and my son still lives there. That’s the first LONG road trip I plan in “Moneypenny”. And I am an old SGT so I guess my butt can still take it!

I’m with Dale, my foam only seat means about 1 hour at a time. The last time I went 100 miles, I walked like an Orangutan for the next hour!

Allen,
Mine is just foam as well and still holding up, but if you can figure out a way
to use springs you will be happy on long trips – one hour and my butt is
killing me.

Jim, I have run into a similar problem with my Duchess. My brake and clutch pedal were tight together but pretty much on the same plane. If you look at my gallery photo of the front speaker set up, you’ll see that my pivot point on the gas is higher on the fire wall. That allowed me to put an extension on the gas pedal that allows me to toe…[Read more]

Jim, I looked at a picture of a FiberFab car with no carpet on the side panel and you may gain an inch or more space on the left side by glueing the carpet directly to the inside of the side panel. I’m guessing that the carpet is fitted to some type of backboard to hold it in place.
The roller pedal for the gas looks like it may have p…[Read more] -

The carpet is worn on the side from the clutch foot rubbing it. You can see in the picture that the clutch is furthur out than the brake. When I begin to brake and then have to clutch, my clutch foot ends up on top of the brake foot and then it has to travel past the brake to disengage the clutch. I have to be real careful to put only the edge o…[Read more]
