thanks again for the valuable information. It gives me a good place to start. Hope to have my TD inspected in the next day or so. The procedure in NC is quite convoluted for a “reconstructed car from out of state” Wish me luck. Thanks again tom

Neat. Too bad there’s not a lot of room for that in a VW based kit. Although I might be able to do something like a large glove box.

Keep in mind that it’ll cost about $700-$800 to get it chromed.

My VW based TD had P165/80R-15 tires on OEM VW “Baja Bug” rims. Same as the tires that came on the VW.
Experimenting with tire pressures, I used ride, cornering and the tread pattern in sand to determine what I eventually ended up with.
Keep in mind, my OEM VW suspension was correctly modified for spring rate front and rear.
I started with 24 lbs…[Read more] -

Prototype Research & Development Ltd,a Canadian firm, continues to manufacture a TD replica.
They do front and rear engine versions. But they are pretty darn pricey!

I have read in several places about the tire pressure differential to improve handling and i assume it is necessary due to the weight difference in the VW powered cars. My question is: Is there a ratio front to rear pressure that occurs frequently? By this I mean that I understand that each car will differ but is there a logical or experiential…[Read more]

I have a swing axle Fiberfab Migi built on a 65 floorpan. It does have a camber compensator. I have put it through some rather sharp curves at “too fast” of a rate due to unfamiliarity with the road. It cornered like it was on rails. More years ago than I care to admit, we raced a 56 VW with really bad swing axles and had to decamber it to get…[Read more]

Hi Andre,All I know is that Frank started this site…and never looked for any help with the expenses. We all owe him a huge debt of gratitude for all of the free years. Finally standing up and opposing the “free ride”, Mark and I waged a small fund raising campaign a few months ago. I think Frank received enough to cover this year’s web hosting…[Read more]

It was just a suggestion, so if donation is keeping this “super” site alive…perfect like this…There is no reason to change if it is working good like this.
I will have a “ton” of question to post during the restoration of my green TD ..so…I need all of you..Thanks in advence for your help!!!

Andre,
Frankie could best answer that question, but I think dues makes it sound like you have to pay to get info. We never gave Frank much cash over the last few years, but felt it is better that we members fund the cost of the site by donations once a year for Frankie to pay the yearly fee.
The information here is truly invaluable to TD kit…[Read more] -

I did not order the optional wire wheels. Nor did I buy a st of wheels from Dayton. I ran wire wheel covers until about five years ago. Then I converted to a look as close to the original TD look as I could get. I took a set of VW chrome wheel covers and drilled the centers to accept reproduction TD hubcap medallions. I painted the VW steel wheels…[Read more]
