I am dreaming. I have more than enough work ahead of me with the car the way it is. The car I purchased had not been maintained in years. Some of the kit parts were not installed and I guess lost over the years. Some of the work that had been done was a hack job that will need to be corrected. The front tube had been cut and turned so I need…[Read more]

Almost went there with the first Pink MG. Many Speedster replicas are going this route. It sure makes the most sense too. Start with something that started out at 2.0L, not 1.2L.
I found most Type I motors run too hot and are not reliable when they are made bigger than 1776cc unless they are converter to the Porsche type cooling fan and shrouding…[Read more] -

The transmission bolt patterns should be the same.I do not recall if the type 4 is the same width. It is however abit deeper than a type 1 due to different air cooling shroud on the front of the motor verses the type 1 being on top.I would measure the two motors and check your clearance front to back/side to side.May require some modificaction the…[Read more]

Paul, many thanks. Your description of the heater cables matches what I see and there are air ducts under both seats. I have owned a 61 beetle and a 71 minivan but had not seen these levers before.
thanks again, tom -

Good luck. These are tough cars to rub out because of all the compound curves. The good news is that gel coat is much thicker than paint. So chances are excellent you will be able to bring out the shine again.

The knob on the dash may be connected only to a blower for he defroster vents. The levers on either side oof the emergency brake are attached to cables which run through the center tunnel and attached to airflow valves on the heater boxes on either side of the engine. They open and close those valves and allow heated air into the passenger…[Read more]

Yes my TD still has its heater. There is a knob on the dash which turns on the heater fan. The levers must control the airflow. Thanks, I’m sure I will have many more newbie questions before the car is finished. Many thanks.

For some reason the link in my prior post goes to the car care line. Just use the links in left hand pane to get to the boat/RV products.
I would also right-click the link above and open it in a new window or tab. Otherwise it opens within the forum pane of the tdreplica site and limits your view.PMOSSBERG39738.9584143519 -

Welcome Tom,
First question…paint or gel coat?
Assuming gel coat, I’ve had great success with Meguiars line of boat polishes and waxes.
This link is to Meguiars boat/RV page. I do not use the “premium” line. I use the standard line of products (in the blue bottles), just click the polish and wax links on the left and look around.

Larry,I looked at the photo you suggested and it does look pretty good. My front shell is a little different. I’ll have to hold some slats up to mine and see how it would look. Thanks for the suggestion.Pat

Pat, Look at the In The Pink photo gallery. It shows a grille like I was referring to in the lower right corner. You can enlarge it to get a better view. Larry

Larry,Using glue to attach the slats is something I hadn’t thought of. I”ll have to look at that. My grille shell is a separate piece so water leakage wouldn’t be a problem. As for being strong enough you’re right it might not be strong enough. I had thought by attaching the slats to the rear of the shell it would strengthen it enough. But…[Read more]
