I’d first check the ground wire. Could be loose. Pull the headlight and check the headlight connector. The ground wire (if VW color coding is used will be BROWN.) If not VW wiring it’ll be black and probably will NOT run all the way to the dash. Most likely it’ll run to the chassis somewhere near the headlight area. My TD is a Fiberfab and is…[Read more]

My plan was to try to troubleshoot this myself as I don’t have much time. As I mentioned, the car is being inspected tomorrow.

My fiberfab does not use a VW wiring harness. The factory used single colour wires with numbered tags on my TDR that after 35 years have dried and fallen off some of the wires. There is a Fiberfab wiring diagram in the tech manual section of the website

To add to Kall’s diagnostics a common problem that can be intermittent in nature is a bad ground. You can test with a Volt/ohm meter or a 12volt light bulb with alligator clips as per John Muir’s diagram. Before offering more advice are you going to do the diagnostics and repairs yourself or go to a mechanic?

Sorry you are “short” of time to repair your “disconnect”.
Troubleshooting thoughts:
1. Goes on and off – can’t be a fuse, they only work once.
2. Both headlights? – can’t be the bulb.
3. Both high and low beams – not the “dipper” switch on the floor.
4. Does your car have the headlight “high/low” switch as part of the turn signal switch? -…[Read more]

Hey Guys!
This is my first post – so be gentle. I just bought my first MG TD fiberfab kit car with a ’71 vw engine. No sooner do I get it home, the headlights won’t come on. I started it up a day later, they came on and then went out.
I assume there is a short or loose connection somewhere. Where should I begin to look. The car is goin…[Read more]

Hi Ian, sorry about not getting back to you sooner. I decided to go with a cloth top looks more authentic. I decided to use Sunbrella fabric, the type of canvas that they use on boat tops, I just got a hold of a local boat top guy gave him my old vinyl top to use as a pattern. He charged me $600 all in for the top, tonnoue cover, and side, got him…[Read more]

Ok, I stopped on my way home from work and, surprisingly, he had brought them in. Hopefully my photos will make it.
All right! Four fronts and one rear(pulled at random). He has no use for these and basically wants the room they take up. He will pretty much accept the first offer he gets.

Ex post facto of getting Toller’s gauge installed I found a place in Fort Lauderdale that will repair the old VDO speedos like the one I have (see pics above). It’s not cheap but it’s something to consider. Here’s their website if you’re interested:

I believe Classic makes a VW cable driven speedo. So if the one you have actually has gear damage you can probably find a replacement. They make a 3.38″ version. You can check some of the dune buggy parts supliers or the standard Jbugs, cip1 (http://www2.cip1.com/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=C14-3992), etc. Should be a pretty simple swap. Good luck!!

I got the bezel off by using a pair of SMALL needle nose pliers from the back side(so it wouldn’t show) and flatten the lip on the bezel. Then I sort of “screwed” the glass lens out. You’ll need to remove the knob from the trip meter and the glass should come right off.
As to the sending unit you refer to, it’s for the digital trip meter. The…[Read more]
