Sam. When you changed the starter did you also change the bushing in the transaxle case? If not it may be the problem. The bushing costs very little. Something in the $3.00 range. Again just another thought of many you will receive.

I’m still at a loss as to what the real problem was/is. I had a starter problem when I first bought the car and had to replace the starter then. The car is still at my son’s house so I haven’t been able to do much with it yet.

If it’s icing you’ll know easy. It does happen! I had it happen in Bridget on a sunny July day, and just going round the corner. Also had the idle shut-off solenoid lose its wire once. Had to have a neighbor help push me the last 100 feet up the hill to my driveway.

Well today we have an unexpected milestone.

34PICT3 and 009 dizzy have a history of not playing well with each other. That’s why I always stick to a SVDA dizzy with a 34PICT carb. No mismatch problems.

Might it be a worn starter bushing? Hopefully Davearoy will chime in. He just went through a starter issue.

Yeah should have thought of vacuum leaks. And Roy is also right on. I like both those diagnoses better than my tins theory.

You might even have a bit of extra material on the cover that you could grind off. Sometimes they’re not of consistent thickness. A quarter inch is plenty strong, and some parts of some kits are nearly an inch thick.

Sounds like power is getting to the starter. I vote either the solenoid is bad, or the starter itself. But I’m far from an expert!
