Spent the entire day attempting to install shift rod into new bushing. No luck. The rod end is too out of round to slide thru new bushing. I tried grease etc and attempting to reshape the rod thru the shifter opening(impossible). Not sure what to do now.

Screen or no, a bunch of rust and crap could be blocking the teeny tiny fuel outlet in the tank. That’s what sidelined me in the first couple weeks of ownership. Tank got below half or so, and she’d stall on the way to work.

Replaced coil. Not the problem. Took fuel pump apart. cleaned, new gasgets etc . Carb apart .and cleaned. not the problem. I’m wonder is there a filter or screenwhere gas leaves the tank . I took a air hose and blew it in the fuel line towards the tank lots of noise and the car runs like a champ

You still have time to relocate the emergency/parking brake handle to a more accessible position between the seats.

I will include a 6 of good beer with the sale:-)
As you can see in the background I am a VW person but I need stuff that can haul things. Found it at an auction and had to save it from the scrapers. The owner was trying to get way more cause of what it cost him to buy but the closing on the house was 2 days later.Any reasonable offer accepted 😆 -

I also run a cable from the battery to a central post inside the car for common ground. I never had a problem with those circuits.

Rick,
Positively Negative, an article in the July 2014 issue of Kitplanes magazine takes a similar position to yours. The author advocates dedicated grounds instead of just bolting the wire to the closest bolt on the frame.BDriver -

To remove the shift rod…There is an oval access plate at the front of the tunnel. In your TD, it might be behind the assembly supporting the front of the body. Remove that plate and feed a wire (or electrician’s “snake”) through the tunnel. Attach it to the shift rod and pull it out the front.

That’s where I was on my project a few months ago. Making better headway now that I’m back on it.
Like the song says, “God is great, beer is good and people are crazy!” But MGTDrs are cool! 🙂 -

Looks like a viable project. Some assembly definitely required.

Steve: No worries on the gauge. Just letting you know if you go that way.
I re-did mine a few years ago trying for the “authentic” look. Noticed that the stock ’72 Bug Speedo reads to the correct 100 mph, includes a totally usable fuel gauge (mine was dodgy), is close to the TD-correct 5 inches in diameter and could be retro-fitted with a white… - Load More
