Thxz Roy ..very nice comparison ..all of the wheels look great..
I guess it’s our personal choice.I chose the 15″white flat 4 banjo because it looks to me the most original . It also gives me a much better feel and sensitivity to the road than the stock 14″ Grant. Not to mention it keeps me on a diet so I can get behind the wheel In my LR MG TDr. -

Ok, for some reason my text didn’t post, so here it is again. I really like the FS wheel with the rivets you first posted from Amazon. Of the pics you posted above of the wheels on your TDr, I like Pic #3 best.Sam

Nobody, you apparently have what is called a 5 hole hub, not an adapter. The more common hub is a 3 hole type. But if you find the steering wheel you like in a 5 hole pattern you probably could just bolt it on. If it is too close to the dash, there are spacers/adapters made and sold by Grant and Forever Sharp and others. If the wheel that yo…[Read more]

There are many variables in selecting the “right” steering wheel for your TDr. I have been surprised by a few and hope that I may help you better make a decision by eliminating a few based upon my errors.Note that our TDrs are all slightly different in the mounting of the steering shaft. The center of my shaft is 29″ off the floor at the end… -

So this may be a little bit off topic of the original post but I see that the topic is now to adapters. Seeing all the posts about 3 to 5 hole adaptors doesn’t make sense to me as my steering column has 5 holes already. And it doesn’t seem like an adaptor, unless these work differently than I think.
And with the current “adaptor” I have the… -

Dan, Doug needs not only the glass, but the frame too. But right: if there’s a hotrod shop in the vicinity I bet you can get someone interested.

Well so much for “finished this weekend” ha! These quick little projects always seem to take forever! For some reason one of the coats of clear coat must’ve dried funny so now I need to sand it down a little and put on a few more layers, then clean up the instrument holes seeing as how they got clear coat in them and don’t fit any of the gauges…[Read more]

Just had a new one made. Having tried all the usual suspects like safelite and glass providers I ended up going to a classic car shop here in Pittsburgh who had “their glass guy” make a new one based on my old split one. It didn’t seem to be a big deal.Bill (crash55)was nice enough to do a template of his Fiberfab windshield as it is still off the…[Read more]

This isn’t right and it’s not cheap but the shape is right. I bet it could be made to work. The other sure-fire way to make the car mega-cool is to forgo the windshield and top altogether and buy a pair of Brooklands Aeroscreens (or just one). Goggles are not optional with those.

Mike,
I think it’s time for some pictures of the engine bay and cover. -

Thanks, Bill. It does feel like old sealant more than it feels like gunky oil. Did not see any on the crank or rods. No sign of any on the oil pickup screen either. I’ll see what’s on the rocker shafts.

Is it just the mating surfaces or has it appeared in moving parts…rocker shafts, beatings, etc.?

Black silicone used where it shouldn’t have been and has been sucked through the engine.

Agree with Alan. Also, remember that the original VW engines with alternators were all with dog-house cooling shrouds that used different, thicker fans.
I don’t have any experience with them, nor with all the aftermarket ones available today, so I’m reluctant to offer any opinions… -

The alternator stand and the generator stand are different. That’s due to the wider portion of the alternator. While a generator will fit on an alternator stand the reverse is not true. I don’t think one is taller than the other but I’m pretty certain the alignment of the fan belt from the crank pulley to the alternator/generator pulley is the same.

Ah, and now I see it. The bloody things are huge. This one also has some kind of bullet-shaped nut holing the pulley on. So it might be that…

Yeah, I got nothing.
All I’ve read says the alternator stand is shorter than the generator stand. And alts are as a rule quite a bit shorter than generators (though the pulley has to still be out there even with the crank pulley, so that shouldn’t matter). What I was wondering–since I’ve never looked at one close up–was whether an alt-equipped… -

Kent, I agree. Too much setback. The rig (a standard Grant VW/3hole hub and a 1″ Forever Sharp billet aluminum adapter makes the steering wheel mounting surface 2″ aft of where the black VW tube. This one looks like 4″. FS adapters are available on amazon.com for about $23 and I would recommend buying the one that goes from 3 to 5 or 6 hol…[Read more]
