  • According to the CMC/Fiberfab assembly manual, the lower bracket that is U-bolted to the wishbone gets bolted to the larger main bracket. You attach the splash plate and bumpers to the main bracket and then all that gets lifted to the proper height and the vertical pieces of the lower bracket get marked. Then you drill and bolt the ma…[Read more]

  • And now that I’ve read your post carefully, in Allen’s photo the extensions at the top of the support bracket go to bolt holes at the ends of the torsion tube. To the best of my knowledge the side to side piece does not attach at the center. You should know mine is in pieces in my garage. Have the pedals and shifter out, and the VW seat rails off.…[Read more]

  • the bracket that comes up from the frame wishbone is a 32 inch angle iron 2″ by 2″ by 1/4 thick and the 2 vertical pieces are 14″ flat also 2″ and 1/4″ thick. hopefully you can see in the photo the slots to accommodate the u-bolts that attach to the wishbone. My vertical pieces have no slots so it may be the expectation is to weld to the larger…[Read more]

  • Here is a picture of the rear bracket. Later in the build the lower bracket is pulled up and bolted to this main bracket. If that doesn’t work you can go to this link to see my build photos to date. http://www.fotki.com/Allen1209

  • Well time to go get to work on my CMC TDr 2.3l Ford rear brakes. Newkitman (Allen C), were you stationed at the NAS? I’m retired USAF and Federal Civil Service.

  • Mike,

I’m having the same problem, missing the brackets entirely. I’m a little confused, the lower bracket from trans tubes with 2 U-bolts makes sense which I’ve attached. What is the cross bracket width 32 inches or 42 inches? So it appears the 2 support brackets (43 inch) from front to back end with the bumper mounts go to the lower support.…

Here is a better picture. You are right. It’s an eagle. My earlier post was a mistake.

Jeff, Look at the picture on the first page of Part 1 of the Classic Roadsters assembly manual (bottom of the Download Manuals page).I never put the radiator cap mascot on my car. And it’s packed away somewhere; not sure where.

JohnnyB I know what you mean about welding. After classes you just have to practice, practice, practice. And practice welding thick to thin metal (very useful when welding in floor pans). I used to live in Meridian. Stayed in an apartment on 52nd street next to Mercy Hospitall/

  •  Glad you got it going – I did no work today – back not up to it – need to order a gland nut and tranny seal – have the rest. Will work on it slowly this week – hope to have the new tran installed before the parts come and then just just install everything – maybe done by Saturday night.

I’ve used Presta Compound after color sanding. Excellent results. Made to be used with a power buffer.

  • Done with the clutch.  New Sachs clutch.  No slippage.

Went for a hard run this afternoon – up to 70mph which is about 5-10 over my comfort zone but I wanted to know.

Hot sunny day.  1600SP.  Holley Bugspray.  .054 jets.  009 dist timed 30 degrees btdc @3000rpm:

    195 degree oil.
    35# at 3000rpm.
    40# @ 3500rpm.
    15# @  900rpm hot.

I’m glad there is another rookie at work. I,ve decided to post just about everytime I visit the site, which is just about every day. I have the rear suspension ii and now I start getting ready to pull engine and tranny, the front susp/steering. The donor is 50 miles away from my assembly point(my garage). I just started a welding class  to save c…[Read more]

528 miles later and I’ve got it home. Yes, I said 485 miles since picking it up last Tuesday. So, here is the story.Picked it up Tuesday and paid $2,500. Got insurance from American Collectors for $298 agreed value $5,000. Mileage on vehicle 6,300 total. Looks like factory built (how would I know for sure?)Went to local Auto parts store and the…[Read more]

  • Nope, didn’t get it in today, no help.  Tomorrow is the big day.  Went over and put my spare SVA distributor on Jack’s low power TD (a 1600DP as opposed to the 2332cc) instead of the 009 that was hesitating badly.   Spent the rest of the day prettying up the inside of my engine compartment and wires and plugged a few air leaks in my engine sh…[Read more]

  •  Thanks RoyWell I was right – broken fork – everything laying down on the bottom of the bell housing – lots of oil as well – bad seal – most likely the tranny leaking. Will use the speedie stuff in the short term – buy more for that ride later – was thinking of using a 914 5 speed ( have one sitting in the garage ) anyway so that gives me the…[Read more]

  •  Got ya  – sorry about that – can’t just send back the incorrect parts? One of the reasons I sometime order through Auto Zone or Advance here in town is they can take returns if something is wrong and easy to get replaced – most time if they can get the part it costs a bit more then from a VW place but get it the next day.I still have not decided o…[Read more]

  • Dale, you are right that I didn’t explain what I was asking very well.  I was wondering whether it would be ok to replace the throw-out fork in my transmission so that I could use the 69 kit that I had bought or should I just order a “correct” ’71 clutch kit and do it right at an extra $80 expense.

I decided that my MiGi is nice enough to do it r…
