Roy,What advise do you need? My tear out will begin this morning – most important thing – match your throw out bearing and pressure plate to the transmission ( by the year ) – the rest will work out if I remember correctly.

There are 475 registered users. But obviously only a small percentage are active. The Registry thread has 130 entries. A handful own two cars. Without really checking I’d say that is about 125 owners.

I went through two sets of VW front seats, Ghias are too wide along with stock Bug seats. Where I work there are a lot of different golf type carts and John Deere Gators. The best I’ve seen are Columbia Eagle seats but finding some cheap is hard if not impossible to do. Finally saw the JD “Gator” seats which have flip forward and NARROW sliding…[Read more] -

Well, I started to put the new throw-out bearing in and noticed that it is a bit different from the one installed in my “69 VW”. It is a 69 engine and is a 69 chassis so I assumed that it was a 69 clutch and ordered the kit for a 69, but SURPRISE! It appears that I had a 71 clutch and throw-out and actuator installed. It turns out that the 71…[Read more]

I’ve heard other guys talk about Sea Foam, but have never tried it myself.

In my youth I had an air cooled Corvair (America’s VW) that would be noisy until I started adding STP. It made a noticeable difference in valve train noise. Nowadays I prefer Sea Foam to quiet an engine.

Not really trying accomplish anything . Happened to be a Monroe Muffler shop started talking to a guy who told me he always uses LUCAS oil treatment in his 57 chevy and he swears by it. He said he was burning oil now he not. Car runs better and is also cooler. We also talked about STP He says lucas is a lot better . He also said he would run 20W…[Read more]

Bill, like you, I have used STP. I was taught to use it as an assembly lube when rebuilding engines and have used it since the 1950’s. There probably is better stuff, but that’s what I was taught and I am exceptionally gentle and careful when first rolling an engine over.
I too, wonder what Greg is trying to accomplish with additives. I hav… -

I used STP in a clapped-out ’62 Austin-Healy Sprite that I drove in college, and it kept the idle oil pressure up until I could afford to have the engine pulled and rebuilt. Had the consistency of honey. Haven’t used it since, though. What are you trying to achieve?

Yes, thermostat full up is vanes open, should be maximum cooling. I have been a mechanic for over 40 years and I’ve learnt more this past couple of months than I ever thought possible! but I still can’t get this darn VW to cool down! I know vmy engine isn’t in new condition but it has good compression and is clean with no oil leaks. It wouldn’t…[Read more]

Now that I finally got “Abby” (Fiberfab-II 1600cc dp 009 points SOLEX 34 PICT-3) out of the garage and on the road, I’m having some serious overheating problems. Luckily, I can now measure temp and oil pressure since I just rewired the car, adding a temp gauge and oil pressure gauge to the dash.
It has been in the high 90’s here in coastal NC an… -

How did you run the galvalume firewall on yours mrimd? I can’t seem to get mine cool enough to suit me! I live 16 miles from town and after that distance my oil temp is over 210 and my oil light is winking at me at idle! I KNOW if I can get that temp down 10 to 15 degrees the oil pressure will correct itself. I just tonight cut the holes in my…[Read more]

Ultraviolet breaks up the long polymers in all plastics. Then the shorter polymer chains start evaporating and flaking off. This is why gel coat, varnish, polyester, epoxy and even the clear plastic headlight covers on late model cars eventually all chalk. The only way to clear this up is to remove the outer layer of broken polymers. In really…[Read more]

I have bought some fiberglass parts from him that were missing from an unassembled kit I bought. He will negotiate (as much as 50% on some parts – don’t tell him I said so)and appears to be only game in town for FG. Anything other than fbrgls go to mgmagic cip even mossmotors.Be sure to identify you kit precisely and ask for photo of part. I…[Read more]
