It seems like all VW TDr’s that are for sale advertise “35 mpg”.
Does anyone really (as in really) get 35 mpg?
The best I could ever do was about 28. (And that was during the Carlisle Autocross where Ed beat me and Wobby said it looked like I “was out for a Sunday drive”.)
December 10, 2014 at 2:51 pm #262368I average about 25 MPG
December 10, 2014 at 3:37 pm #26236925-26 with the old engine. I expect better from the Soob. One Speedster guy (with a carb on his!) claimed 38 or 39 running from Canada to Florida and back.
But, no, it’s not possible with a type 1.
December 10, 2014 at 3:55 pm #26237035 MPG might be possible with a VW 40HP engine in a TDr, tuned for efficiency and driven to maximize MPG…
There’s some weight reduction with the TDr, but the aerodynamics are awful — and get worse with speed.
I think you’d likely need to change the gear ratio (e.g. use a “freeway flyer”) to get much over 30 MPG out of a 1500 or 1600 engine.

Slowly coming back from the ashes...December 10, 2014 at 4:09 pm #262371I get @26 mpg around town In my LR MGTDr with the 1776 cc …And I use ethanol free gas ..

December 10, 2014 at 10:48 pm #262373I think I read that ethanol free gas gives you about a 5% increase in mileage. (After the carb is adjusted for the richer fuel.)

December 11, 2014 at 4:42 pm #262376Average 20-25 round town. Highway???
December 11, 2014 at 6:57 pm #262377Last I checked it was about 25 give or take on the highway. I put a new carb in recently though and hopefully that will increase efficiency a bit but I haven’t taken it out on a long enough trip to find out yet.
December 11, 2014 at 8:29 pm #262378I get just over 19 mpg around town on mostly two-lane roads with lots of curves and a few traffic lights, and rarely doing more than 45 mph. Even when I get out in the boonies, I stick to county roads and seldom exceed 30-35 mph.
