Well I got almost 500 miles since the new speedometer. Its a 4 cylinder and in all those years I never checked the mileage. I got 29.4 mpg the first 500 miles. Not bad! Just curious as to what kind of mileage you all get, especially the VW’s.
Randy in Chandler Arizona, great B-bopp'in teritory. I must have the only one in the country made by Rich Industries in Port Elizabeth, South Africa, on a 1986 Ford Cortina (english ford escort) It's a 1600cc straight four cylinder front engne, 4 speed, changed from right side driver to left side with several shafts and u-joints. BEBOP because I once had an MGB with license plate MG-BEPOP in Virginia.
August 13, 2012 at 10:14 pm #251380That’s better than I’ve been doing so far. I ran a few tanks earlier in the season and was getting 26-27. I do believe she’s still a tad rich, at least.
August 13, 2012 at 10:25 pm #251381My current gas mileage is infinite! 😆

"Drive Happy"August 14, 2012 at 5:58 pm #251385Bill, that makes me fill a little better, I’m getting abot 24 with my Ford.
August 14, 2012 at 7:58 pm #251386Bill gets 19 but he can cover those miles a heck of a lot faster than most of us.
August 15, 2012 at 4:56 pm #25138722-24 with the Ford power, 24-26 with the VW.
August 20, 2012 at 10:02 pm #251388OK thanks. The reason I asked was I had a VW bug in Germany in the army with a sunroof and a rainbow painted across the back bonnett. It was a great vehicle and got about 20 miles a gallon, but it was pretty much pedal to the metal at all times. Only thing I could pass on the Autobahn was Semi-trucks, so I stayed off it. And if you all feel bad about the price of fuel, it was $4 a gallon there in 1975 ….without your military ration card which let you buy gas at stateside prices.

August 21, 2012 at 5:33 pm #251389When I first bought my TD 3 years ago I was getting an average of 30-32 mpg. I had the valves adjusted 3 months later and then I was averaging 28 mpg. I just had major work done on my engine last month including a carb rebuild. Now I’m averaging 24 – 27 mpg. Go figger.
August 21, 2012 at 6:43 pm #251390Probably that 10% Ethanol causing the lower MPG.

"If one thing matters, everything matters" - from the book The ShackAugust 22, 2012 at 2:28 pm #251391Good thinking Allan. I always get less mileage from blended fuel too. I wish I’d a thought of that when I put a new elec. fuel pump on my’63 Willys 4wd truck. The first one lasted 20 years. One of those old AC pumpers that pumps a bit and shuts off when the pressure gets up when the bowl is full. You know what they look like. After much searching I found the last AC fuel pump in the country, put it on thinking, good to go for a long time. A year and a half later I barely made it home one day and had to put on one of the continuously spinning Carter pumps from Napa for nearly a hundred bucks. I found out from the old boy at Napa that its the alcohol in the gas that makes the old style pumps go out by quickly rotting the seals. Dang the Luck !

August 22, 2012 at 6:27 pm #251392There’s an email letter going around from SEMA that adrdesses that and the new house bill to kill raising ethanol to 15%. The Ethanol is bad for the new engines especially the seals. newkitman2012-08-22 18:28:04
