    @sreynolds

    My replica has a 1971 dual port engine that the PO had put a 30 PICT carb on it. It is suppose to have a 34 PICT 3 carb according to the VW books I have, but in searching for a replacement carb and also searching this site, I see references to both a 34 PICT 3 and a 34 PICT 4. Which is the correct carb and what is the difference? Also, my engine has a Pertronics electronic distributor ( I think that is the correct term for it).

    Sam when compared to the 34PICT the 30 PICT is way better. The 34PICT has is that darned notorious flat spot Hot VWs and VW Trends magazine ran about 2 months of articles on how to rid the 34PICT of that flat spot but most just go with the 30PICT. I recommend rebuilding your 30PICT. My 71 had a 34PICT3 and I just tonight finished rebuilding the replacement 30PICT. My .02 cents worth.

    Sam, you may know that I have been doing a lot of fiddling with carbs this winter.  (Somebody has to knock Bill off his AutoX pillar)  😀 I also did a lot of reading.  It seems that no one likes the 34 and that many/most folks are putting 30’s on your engine. I do not know any of this from experience, but rather from extensive research.  Like Allen says…Stick to the 30.

    I agree, Roy and Allen.  If you’ve going to stick with a stock single carb, stay with a 30 PICT.
