I guess I didn’t make it clear that I did not have a jack. Only the board and blocks and my son who was 10. A standard beetle is much more difficult than a Daytona MiGi. A beetle has to be hiked up in the air so far that you feel that it’s going to tip over on it’s nose. On my TD, all I need to do is take the rear bumper off, disconnect and slide to the rear.
To remove on my TD:remove only 4 bolts in the bellhousing, the fuel line, the electric to the voltage regulator andthe hot from the ignition switch at the coil,2 hose clamps for the air to the cabin heat, and slide aft.Ez Peezy!April 6, 2013 at 8:23 pm #252557So you guys can mix and match and swap the motors until you find the ideal combo for each one. Cool!

April 7, 2013 at 11:38 am #252559Louise and I are still planning to come. Finally got the wiring installed for the trailer brakes on the Roadtrek. Why they didn’t install it at the factory is beyond me. The weather is starting to get warmer so about time for the annual Tinkerbelle waxing. Interesting how the finish fades so over the winter. A treatment with Meguiar’s Color X, followed by Meguiar’s Tech wax 2.0 seems to get it as good as it is going to get. No show car, but lots of fun.
Louise is an accomplished China Painter and artist. She and our daughter are also rabid knitters. Hummm, did I spell that right?Avid, rabid, oh well something like that.Looking forward to meeting all of you.April 7, 2013 at 12:08 pm #252560Rollie, Please consider entering in the AutoX. We are all rank amateurs (except for Bill who is a trophy winner) and it should be a hoot. If we can get all to go, it would hopefully make 7 TDs in the field.
April 8, 2013 at 10:32 am #252561OOPS, sorry for blank post. We have never been to the show, so are unaware of what the AUTOX is, or how one signs up. Could you explain ?
April 8, 2013 at 10:47 am #252562I’ll let Bill, our resident AutoX expert, explain. I know nothing about it. Never done it. A novice. Bill & Ed ran last year. It is held immediately next to where the TD “spot” is on the show field. Our cars are certainly not fast, but if we could get a large showing, it’d be fun just among ourselves.
April 8, 2013 at 3:12 pm #252563Rollie: AutoX is short for auto-cross. It’s a race against the clock through a curvy course–in this case a very small oval on site of the show. Anyone can try. It think it cost $10 or $20.
You need a car, you need to sign a liability release and you need to pass a “tech inspection” wherein they make sure there is nothing in the car that can fly loose in a fast turn. I almost got barred for not having a battery hold down but, since my battery’s in a well they let me compete.
They lend you a helmet, you get in line at the appointed time and they direct you when to start and when to get off the track (after three laps). For your minimum outlay you get three runs of three laps. You are timed, and they make that time public.
That would be potentially embarrassing for the others if not for the fact that I plan on doing it again.
Here is my report from Carlisle, 2012, with some autoX photos and description.
Oh, and also: my wife is a potter. She can talk to your wife about clay & stuff.

April 8, 2013 at 4:56 pm #252564Sounds like fun, I’me in. Thanks for the info. I guess you sign up when you get there.
April 8, 2013 at 8:05 pm #252565Rollie, its a blast. You can safely do things here you can’t (shouldn’t) do on the street. Ed explained it pretty well. It’s a safe place to see how far your car can be pushed. It also allows you a place to determine and correct any oversteer or understeer conditions you might have. Additional info can be found here.

April 10, 2013 at 9:15 pm #252568Hell yeah!
April 13, 2013 at 3:37 am #252569I was looking at last years AutoX results and am a bit befuddled by the PAX correction factor. Specifically, why was Bill’s PAX .799 and Ed’s ,928? I would have not noticed or said anything if Ed’s was the same or maybe even a smaller multiplier than Bill’s. Where does this PAX # come from and what is it based upon?
April 13, 2013 at 7:08 am #252570That number more or less helps to level the playing field.

"Drive Happy"April 13, 2013 at 7:29 am #252571I just looked at the results list and there is no posting as to what class our cars were placed in. I’m pretty sure I listed mine in E-Mod, as that’s where I’ve been running for years, but that doesn’t reflect the PAX number used. When I run, I just get a kick out of looking at the type of other cars my best raw time beats. The XKE, Celica, Miata, S4, RX7, you would think, should have walked all over a TD kit car. It brings a smile to my face when I run and surprise the hell out of people and tell them it’s just a collection of used parts. Lets do it again in Carlisle!

"Drive Happy"April 13, 2013 at 8:04 am #252572Bill, I agree: I, like you, enjoy most of all, surprising other “more capable” machines.
What caused me to ask the question was the difference between your and Ed’s PAX #. I have spent quite a bit of time trying to figure this classification stuff out and have come up empty. HS, which you ran in, comes close but we don’t exactly fit there either. I think you ran in HS and Ed in EM. ???Actually, the raw time is probably the best “measure” for us.I suspect that you might not know but do you remember what the highest speed you attained on the Carlisle setup last year? I suspect about 40 mph, but would be interested. Did you get out of 2nd gear? I’m good up to 45 in 2nd. The reason that I ask is that I am most concerned about my 2nd gear synchronizer, if I am pushing hard, and shifting 2nd is my weak link. Normal driving it never grinds, but …..well you know the rest.I’m looking forward to it. For Carlisle 2014, I am going to lower MiGi about 2″ regardless of what happens this year.April 13, 2013 at 7:22 pm #252573Friday Night Block Party…
Schu, I think you expressed interest in this event. I think I’ll indulge as well. Looks like it went well last year. Should be fun.Bill Ascheman

"Drive Happy"April 13, 2013 at 8:34 pm #252574Just put it in second and leave it there, Roy. It’s a tight course and 45 would be very, very fast on any part of it. Your syncros should not mind you running in second gear.
April 13, 2013 at 8:53 pm #252575That’s what I wanted to hear, Thanks Ed.
April 14, 2013 at 9:00 am #252576Bill, sounds good – maybe a run downtown w/ a few of us after Friday night dinner.
Ed – 2nd gear it is – the thing is – Roy is retired and most likely spending his days practicing on a local track. I know he is fast because I have seen a picture of him in his car w/ two wheels up in the air!
April 14, 2013 at 9:59 am #252577Hey guys, I’ve fallen behind and have not been able to keep up with the postings because I have been spending my days practicing on a local track. In my latest photo, I have 3 wheels up in the air.
April 14, 2013 at 6:34 pm #252578Roy, you can’t Photoshop on track. Sorry !
