December 3, 2013 at 12:37 pm #258399We should have an even better showing of cars in 2014. Lots of new members and some builds should be complete.
I got this flyer from Carlisle this am:December 3, 2013 at 2:15 pm #258400Well that sets up my shows for 2014. 1st is March at the Silver Dollar Showdown VW drag meet here locally; 2nd is the April Bug-a-Palooza VW show in Chattanooga, 3rd is the April Zephyrhills Winter Festival, 4th is Carlisle Import and Kit Car show, and possibly 3 more depending on how my work schedule is. Should be an easier year for 2014. newkitman2013-12-03 14:17:12

"Drive Happy"December 5, 2013 at 7:49 am #258406So last year’s second place club was the Manx people with 11 entrants. Speedsters had 59, including (by my count) 9 of us.
The Avenger folks had five cars, and that was good enough for third place.Does anyone here think this might be the year to break free of the Speedster guys, for the purposes of car count? I think it might be fairer to the other clubs. Presumably we can still piggy-back Bruce’s hotel and meals arrangement if we want. I think there is little chance the Speedsters won’t get their coveted awnings & such.Chime in.December 5, 2013 at 8:34 am #258407I had breakfast yesterday with a very successful PHD psychologist friend of mine. Somehow, the conversation became about how difficult the holiday seasons are for the youngest during family get togethers. The younger is always the youngest even if they are old and established. They simply, when around family, “can’t get no respect”.
Perhaps we could split off a’la separation vice divorce, and still remain “best friends”???December 5, 2013 at 11:09 am #258408Sounds ok to me.
But too late for my own registration.Paul Mossberg

December 5, 2013 at 12:02 pm #258409I plan to bring my Alfred….
December 5, 2013 at 7:57 pm #258410I made this same suggestion several months ago and was shot down. I feel we can provide a strong showing on our own as an independent group. I would like to continue the combination with the SOG with hotel domination and meal events. I am waiting for this sale to register and look forward to further feedback on this issue. TD REPLICA.COM as a group?

"Drive Happy"December 5, 2013 at 10:01 pm #258411If we do go as a group (TD Replica.com)I’ll get a banner made of our TD Replica.com badge that we can display on a easy-up canopy. As a TD group or with the Speedsters, I’m still planning on being at Carlisle with you folks.

"If one thing matters, everything matters" - from the book The ShackDecember 6, 2013 at 12:43 am #258412I have no problem registering under the TD Replica Club. But like I
posted earlier, it’s too late for me. I’m registered already. However, if we do, I would not presume that we can “piggy-back Bruce’s hotel and meals arrangement if we want.”
I’m not advocating for either approach…just putting some thoughts out there.
It is a huge, HUGE effort to arrange and manage the hotel and the weekend events.
Rooms at the Speedster host hotel are limited. It would be only right and proper for the SOG organizers to give priority to their members. In fact, there was a touch of that in 2013. Al asked that I remain silent in this forum about hotel specifics until the SOG members had first shot at making reservations.
Same thing occurred for the Thursday and Friday dinners. Space was limited. And priority went to the SOG members.
In my (very) humble opinion, if we want to register as the TD Replica club, we should
not assume there will be room at the SOG inn. We should be prepared to make
our own hotel and meal arrangements. It’s not just about the largest club “award.” The registration numbers
also get the club the tent for free, along with the tables and chairs for the tent, and the
reserved space on the show field. The higher those numbers are the better. And 25 is the minimum number of registered cars for a small tent. The SOG tent and space are at the high end of what Carlisle Productions provides. My final thought, there was talk about designing a “Speedsters meets Spyders meets TDs” logo for 2014. Not sure if that will happen, but just that is was being considered was a nice gesture.
My two cents.

December 6, 2013 at 7:59 am #258413My 2c:
The first thing that we really need is someone to lead the charge and volunteer to make all the arrangements that Paul mentions. I should think that whoever sets this up should be a Pennsylvania resident. Paul didn’t volunteer.Reading Paul’s post made me realize that we have already been relegated to the “small table”. We are growing, and a rationing of space allocated to TDrs seems inevitable. We need to do something. Two of our members stayed at other hotels last year (Nova Scotia Bob and Happy Jack). I think that it is important that we all stay the same place and it would be terrible if we have to turn TDrs away because a few extra Speedsters showed up.We really need to get a count of who is hoping to attend, even if they can not commit yet.Ed mentions that the Manx group had 11 cars. We could eclipse that I think. But what does that do for us?The details of where do we stay, where do we have the awards dinner (if any), plus other events really is unnecessary until we have someone willing to take charge.I would propose that we have a meeting of Carlisle attendees this coming May and do nothing until then except try and find someone to coordinate the yearly get togethers. My experience in putting things like this together is that the coordinator has to have quite a bit of autonomous power to make group decisions without consulting the group (TDr club attendees) else we will be changing coordinators every year.My 2c worth (+/-).December 6, 2013 at 9:52 am #258414I am w/ Paul on this – The SOC was very nice to me when I asked to join the group 5 or 6 years ago w/ my TD prior to me owning a Speedster myself.
That being said – for a long time I was asked to be in the back for pictures etc. and at first that did bother me a bit ( underneath the VW based kits are almost the same – just fiberglass shells that look different ) and as time went by everyone included me as part of the group and the ” back of the bus ” thing kind of went away or I just did not worry about it. I have made many friends among that group as well as the TD group so would love to be part of both. I would like to stay in the same place and cruise w/ them during most of their activities as well as dinners. That does not mean we can’t do a Friday night TD dinner and a cruise of our own on Saturday when they don’t have anything scheduled except to be at the show field. I think it is more fun cruising then sitting around anyway – I can do that at home. If we want to have our own tent and banner I am OK w/ that as well – I just don’t want to hurt any feelings and keep everyone happy most of the time.I do think Bruce expects us to branch off at some point and is open to suggestions.I do have a Speedster and that makes me a bit different in that I am in all the way in both camps.Maybe Roy has it right – keep it the same this year and discuss the options at Carlisle – I think that was what he was saying? My two centsDecember 6, 2013 at 10:29 am #258415Ed and I had a similar conversation off-line.
Let’s leave things as they are for 2014…and have a conversation during this year’s weekend.I’m not ready to chair this. Been there & done that for many years as a member of the old New Jersey Replicar Club. Not looking to repeat that experience. To Roy’s point about staying together and having two TDr owners stay at a hotel other than the main one….For what it’s worth, members of the SOG also had to stay at other hotels in 2013.Paul Mossberg

December 6, 2013 at 11:26 am #258416I guess that I should have said that it would be nice if all TDrs could stay at the same place. In the 80-90’s, Julie & I owned and operated a Hotel/Motel for 16 years and I tried hard to keep groups together. When I knew that the (annual) NYC Bicycle Club or the Theodore Gordon Fly Fishermen were coming for a weekend, I would tell others who were not affiliated with the expected club that we were “full” even if we weren’t. My point here is that reservation blocks usually required a year or so reservations in advance and the SOG has likely made arrangements. It seems to me that it would not be polite for us to bail out of their group in 2014.
So, if we do have a meeting to discuss 2015 plans, my experience is that, to be safe, we should make tentative reservations that same weekend. Maybe there is such a plethora or rooms in/around Carlisle that it is not necessary and I am being overly cautious.December 6, 2013 at 1:01 pm #258417Hi Roy. You are not being overly cautious.
In fact, the SOG’s host hotel is fully blocked by SOG and others for the 2014 weekend.Al did block the SOG rooms for 2014 before he left this year.Paul Mossberg
