Another newbe to the site.I am putting together a dutchess kit that was started and never completed.I finely got all the panels to line up correctly and now i need to wire it.I did receive the harnesses, but no diagram. Is there any place to locate one? I just finished putting together a fiberfab kit on a VW chassis and wired it from scratch,i was hopeing to make this one a little bit easier. The dutchess is also on a 70 VW chassis. The dutchess is a better built kit and alot heavier fiberglass. Also i need to get a gas tank for this model, the VW tank doesn’t look like it should go in there.I’ve been looking into jeep tanks, but haven’t found one yet.Any advice is appreciated..Thanks..Jon
May 7, 2010 at 11:44 pm #241276Hi Jon,
Sure is. Right here in my office.
Send me a pm with your email address. I will scan and email you the Duchess VW wiring diagrams.
The Classic Roadsters Duchess did not use the VW gas tank. CR provided a ten gallon tank which sits on the floor pan, right side of the tunnel, in front of the firewall.
The filler tube runs off the front of the tank, behind the grill and up to the “radiator cap”.
This allowed for a full trunk up front, with a flat floor.

August 25, 2010 at 11:44 am #241277Paul, do you still have a scan of the Duchess wiring diagram? That will get me started, as the fog lights, horn, wipers, brake lights, and turn signals are presently not working. I guess it would have been easier to say the headlights work!

August 26, 2010 at 5:19 pm #241281I’m glad I’m not the only one that does stuff like that!
I just took another look at the Duchess – the body is definitely going to have to come off to do the floor pans. It looks like it is going to need some other work on the frame as well.
Does anyone know what the numbers mean on the Duchess serial number plate? The serial number on this one is DS-B79-0064. Title says it is a 1953 replica.

August 26, 2010 at 11:24 pm #241282My Duchess serial number is DS-81-1105
DS stands for Duchess
81 was the year the kit was produced. It delivered to me late in 1981.
1105 is likely a sequential serial number. But I have trouble believing they had produced over 1000 kits in 1981. Maybe they started at 1001? I do not know.
So your B79, should mean the kit was produced in 1979 and is unit 64.
The 0069 format suggests my kit really was the 1,105th produced in 81. Again, I am not sure. The number just seems high.
It is also possible, Classic Roadsters started with kit number 0001 and allowed the sequence to cross years, which would mean mine is the 1,105th kit ever and yours is the 64th.

August 27, 2010 at 2:23 pm #241283Thanks, Paul – very interesting stuff… Apparently I have an early Duchess.
August 27, 2010 at 4:06 pm #241284If I’m right, almost an original!

August 29, 2010 at 5:34 pm #241285Here’s a question on the Duchess – How can you tell how old the old girl is? My title says it is a 53. I have seen a number of Duchess’ listed as 52, and even saw one or two that said 54. Mine was made in 1979. Were there variations of this model, or what year replica were they supposed to be?
August 29, 2010 at 5:55 pm #241286They are all from the same molds.
Most of us say they replicate 1952 TDs

August 29, 2010 at 9:33 pm #241287Some of the subtle differences between the various TDs:
1949 and early 1950: solid wheels (not the 15-hole kind)
1951 (or thereabouts) flat-faced speedo and tach gauges give way to dished type
late 1952 or early ’53: windshield wiper motor moved to the center of the windshield (on top), from the passenger side. Three-bowed top frame replaces two-bow frame.
1953: round tail lights (changed from a vertical rectangular style).
There were some other subtle differences, but most of them, like the ones above, are not relevant to us, since our kits mostly don’t have the parts that changed.
August 29, 2010 at 10:20 pm #241288I wondered about that. The top that came with mine is in bad shape and will have to be redone. But it has 2 bows, if by bows you mean the ribs that support the top. So I guess it would come closer to a 52. That was the year I was born, and would be easier to be remember!
