Bill, can I just say: I find it so encouraging that an accomplished builder like yourself can make the exact same bonehead mistake that a pretender/short-cutter like me makes. You may not do it as often, but I hope with time and experience I won’t either. Glad you got that gremlin squared away.

I found myself troubeshooting a light circuit only to realize it was a ground problem all along…Early FF TDr on 69 VW pan
Slowly coming back from the ashes...May 8, 2013 at 8:05 pm #254032Progress…Doors are mounted. Latch, door check, and new lock installed left side. Picked up real nice leather door check straps and locking door catches from a supplier in the UK. My doors will not open on their own ever again.

August 8, 2013 at 8:07 pm #254036Finally got back to working on the car. My back went out over a month ago and I’ve been forced to do almost nothing for quite some time. Lots of chiropractic visits have finally enabled to maintain a vertical position. Yesterday I managed to jack it up and put stands under it. Today I was able to remove the front lamps. I have August and September to get back in shape and color my fenders. My goal is to have a decent looking car in VA this year. I also need to be in shape to make the drive.

August 13, 2013 at 6:47 pm #254038OK, fenders and running boards are off. I need to complete some minor body work and then we’ll get the roller out and see what happens. This weekend is the Duryea Hillclimb in Reading. Last Saturday I spoke with the man who will be installing my cage. He has come up with some modifications that will result in maintaining long term fit as this cage will be removable and only used a couple times per year.

September 7, 2013 at 5:57 pm #254040First coat applied today.
All the accident damage has now disappeared. These pieces haven’t been all one color in almost 20 years.

September 20, 2013 at 12:10 pm #254043What type of paint did you use? I have single stage red that the local paint shop made up for me. Paint, reducer and hardener get mixed 4:1:1. Supposed to spray it on but I’m going to do a test roller application Sunday. Gbaby’s bday party tomorrow. He’s a whole 1.

"If one thing matters, everything matters" - from the book The ShackSeptember 20, 2013 at 8:54 pm #254044Centari…a single stage polyurethane. It doesn’t go on as easy as the marine paint I used on the main body. Adding thinner to the paint causes the foam rollers to expand and fall off the roller handle. Luckily they’re really cheap at Harbor Freight. Applied the last I had tonight.
As far as application, the initial rolling on of the paint causes hundreds of tiny air bubbles in the painted surface. Immediately take a foam brush and gently stroke the painted surface. This dissipated the bubbles. And I do mean immediately.Bill Ascheman

"Drive Happy"September 21, 2013 at 8:47 am #254045I don’t like the color !!!
The can of paint the supplier gave me free last spring turned out to be too light…like milk chocolate. I purchased ($83) a quart of darker brown( selected from a book of paint chip samples). After application, in the sunlight, this is from the wrong end of the color spectrum. It has a tinge of green in it. I cannot like it. I need to find something else for a top coat.Bill Ascheman

"Drive Happy"September 22, 2013 at 6:16 am #254046I’ve had good lock with Kirker paints as an affordable system. It’s less than 1/4 price of name brands, but color list is limited.
http://www.smartshoppersinc.com/kirker/acrylic-urethanes.htmlSeptember 22, 2013 at 9:09 am #254047The paint I plan to use tomorrow (rain forecast for today) is PPG acrylic urethane I purchase from our local Automotive Paint and Equipment (APE) shop. Matched perfectly as you can see in my building moneypenny-part 5 thread.

"If one thing matters, everything matters" - from the book The ShackSeptember 22, 2013 at 6:07 pm #254048I had the paint so I decided to paint my wheels the same color as the body.
With the trim ring…
Tomorrow I’ll order chrome grease caps for the front hub. I’m going to search for factory caps. Anybody with a set of mid ’90’s Mustang Police Car wheel center caps let me know.

"Drive Happy"September 28, 2013 at 8:01 pm #254051Well, I’m pleased with the final color.
Rust Oleum rattle can brown.
It buffed out half decent.Last night I stripped the car down to the bare tub and buffed and waxed the light color panels.
Began reassembly this afternoon.Fenders should get a final going over and start installation tomorrow. I’m kinda liking the wheels.

Put the fenders on with Dzus fasteners! You’d have the best of both worlds!

Speaking of fenders — or fenderless – has anyone tried bicycle style fenders on one of these kits? That would really read it the rod/roadster look…KentT2013-09-29 09:27:59

Running boards still need to be mounted. Should be back on the ground tomorrow. Today really took a toll on my back and knees.
