Getting ready for the fabrication shop to call for the cage install. Running boards came off as planned and the rear cover is off for the cage’s rear supports.

December 6, 2014 at 8:47 am #254107Would LOVE to have an affordable, functional roll-bar for my VW TDr. I’m at a total loss of how I could support the rear braces…

January 23, 2015 at 7:32 pm #254111First test fit of front and rear hoops. He took measurements in my garage and formed them in another. Beautiful fit. the photo only shows the front hoop sitting on the ground. It will follow the body and windshield angle to above the windshield. Soon the welding will begin. Can’t wait.

March 31, 2015 at 1:16 pm #254113Well, yesterday I fired the fabricator. I’ve seen no progress since the last posting. He has some pieces made up in preparation but he has had problems on his end and I feel that his problems should no longer be my problems. I’ve taken the car to a local race car fabricator and he has agreed to take on the project. The car goes into his shop in two weeks and he assures me I’ll have it back in plenty of time to go to Carlisle. 🙂 Weather permitting she’ll be sporting a cage.

"Drive Happy"March 31, 2015 at 7:37 pm #254114Ah. Hard call but a good one. Here’s hoping the new roll bar man will actually roll you out a bar!
April 1, 2015 at 9:05 am #254115Bill,
Is your roll bar/cage outside the car?
Mel
April 1, 2015 at 1:25 pm #254116External. As shown in the last photo, running boards have been modified for length as well as easy removal. Outriggers will be welded to frame and cage bolted to them. Cage will be removable to reinstall running boards hiding the outriggers.

"Drive Happy"April 1, 2015 at 2:03 pm #254117That sounds great. I’m interested to see it finished. Way to go!
April 1, 2015 at 7:30 pm #254118The original fabricator showed up and dropped off the two hoops he had made plus all the material he had purchased to construct the cage. He apologized and said he understood. No hard feelings on either side. I hope the new installer will be willing to use this material.

April 8, 2015 at 7:55 pm #254120Monday was beautiful and it turns out that it was the last time to run her before she goes for the cage. The new fabricator will use all the material I have. Strangely, it turns out that the two hoops the first fabricator supplied were bent by the new fabricator. She goes in Friday for a week or so. I can’t believe how excited I am. Like a kid waiting for Christmas.

"Drive Happy"April 8, 2015 at 8:54 pm #254121I’m also anxious to see what you will have there after it’s done.Found this just now, would think it a nice addition if they could be attached to the chassis via back seat area. One of the first thoughts after getting my car was about lack of a roll bar safety feature like I see on so many small sports cars. Wasn’t really intimidating because I ride a motorcycle, until thinking about a car laying on me instead of just a motorcycle!Oops! See now you already had a picture of the front one, just not mounted yet. Missed that when I saw your message post before.LRH2015-04-08 20:57:47

"If one thing matters, everything matters" - from the book The ShackApril 9, 2015 at 12:06 am #254124If I had a roll bar or hoops installed, I’d want them to fit under the convertible top. I only have a lap belt, so I don’t know if I’d stay inside in the event of a roll over. Is this new addition a race track requirement?

April 21, 2015 at 9:48 pm #254129Got the car back this afternoon. Here are the initial photos from my first walk a round. A little taller than I had envisioned but it has to clear my helmeted head. I like it. Now to paint it and build a cover for the back.
