Hello to my new friends
My name is Rick and i’ve been visiting tdreplica.com for a while but only recently signed-up for membership. This is a great place to visit for advice and some great stories. It feels like a real family here.I bought an MG Duchess a few years ago from a friend of mine who owns a classic car dealership here in Southern California. She, “Eliza Jane”, was in turn key condition and quickly became my daily driver.I bought a gazelle back in the late 90’s and quickly found out why the owner was eager to sell…California smog laws. He managed to get it passed and priced it for a quick sale. Since it was my first kit, I didn’t think about the smog laws. I thought that since it was a VW bug, I was smog exempt. WRONG! Two years later, when I got my registration renewal notice, it said that I needed to pass smog. I took it to my local smog shop and they laughed at me. They said that since it’s a VW, “If she’s not smokin she’s broken”. I found a shop that I paid for a tune-up to retard the engine, pass smog, then pay again to readjust everything so I could drive it. What a pain!I swore I’d never make that mistake again. Eliza Jane is registered as a 1969 Duchess. Being registered as a 69 makes her smog exempt and a highly desired kit car here in California. I’ve got some great stories to share later, I just wanted to say Hello to all of you, for now. Enjoy this last day of April…April 30, 2014 at 4:22 pm #260289Welcome aboard.

"Drive Happy"April 30, 2014 at 4:44 pm #260290Welcome Rick, fortunately Ohio did away with the smog inspections. Some politician made a bunch a money for a few years while in office, then all of a sudden we didn’t need it. Things that make you go Huh.

"If one thing matters, everything matters" - from the book The ShackApril 30, 2014 at 6:42 pm #260292Smog laws can be a real pain for hobbyists and poor people alike (to say nothing of poor hobbyists!). I think that in many cases they have gone away because newer cars–and by that I mean anything made in the last 20 years or so–are so much cleaner than what preceded them that it’s just not cost effective to bother much with these tests. They break hard long before they start making more pollution than your lawnmower does.
Maryland requires a sniff test every few years, but the kits are all exempt–as are most “hot rods” and other enthusiast vehicles. More than a couple legislators own classic cars, so they at least understand the concept.Welcome to you, Rick.April 30, 2014 at 7:59 pm #260293Thanks for the response. My gazelle has been parked on the driveway for a while now. I plan to get her back on the road after I can solve the smog issue. Until then, ELiza Jane has prooven to be my best girl, just dont let the wife hear that.
I have her up on blocks at the moment and shes getting a bumper to bumper rewire. I was tired of old wires breaking every time I had to replace a switch or something. Ill keep you posted on the progress.May 1, 2014 at 8:44 am #260294Welcome aboard Rick!
