    Thanks Bill!

And yes, good point.  I parked the car this winter to work on some small items for it, but found lots of other things when I started digging into it.  I have photos on what I have been doing and it would be fun to share.  I’ll try and get something together here on the forum soon.

    Welcome, Rob.

I was just in your neighborhood coming home from a MINI event. Stopped to see friends and family in Benson.

You’ve got great country there to enjoy your TD.

This car has not been on the rode since 1993 but even before that it was not driven for more then 5 Miles since 1986 we always towed it to car shows I have pics on my profile

The wander is often because it needs more caster. In your car’s case I’d go through all the steering stuff and make sire the front was aligned first. Assume you have new tires. If not, do that before driving it another inch. Tires more than 10 years old are dangerous.

OK so check the rag joint on the steering shaft. Cheap and easy to replace if it’s dry rotted. Use a new rubber one, not urethane.

Your ball joints are almost certainly just fine, but have a look, make sure they’re not wobbly.

Shoot some grease into your beam. There should be four zirks on it.

You’re already replacing the damper. OK good, They do sometimes fail. Tires, though! Tires are usually the problem. On these cars you want your pressure much lower than you probably think. 30 pounds is way, way too much. 22’s probably too much if you’re not racing. I run 16 psi in front on my car, 26 in back (where all the weight is). Low tire pressure is your friend: better ride, better handling. Probably not the cause of your wandering tho.

New shocks. After 40 years, even unused, they often need replacing, You want cheap, oil-filled shocks from cofap.

Everything’s to spec? Lined up? New tires, balanced, inflated modestly to about 16-18 pounds? Wandering still? Add a set of caster shims. These fit between the lower beam and frame head. Just loosen the top beam bolts on each side, then remove the two lower beam bolts, swing the beam forward and slide these babies in. Then tighten all the bolts back tight. Your caster will increase from 1 degree to about 4, and that will help the car track straight at speed.

Congrats on recommissioning grampa’s car. She’s a beauty and deserves to be driven. It’s much more fun than towing!

I’ve got new tires 18psi in front 24 in the back also put new shocks on I’ll see if there is a rag joint I don’t even remember seeing one on it I’ve greased the front unloaded I’ll try the shim thing if the stabilizer don’t fix it thanks for every tip those tires had been put on in 1980 they needed to go asap
