I just found this site and happily joined. I built my 52 MGTD in 1981 and enjoy it every summer. I live in Syracuse and the winters start early 4th of July (just kidding) anyway I have a question on mufflers. I subscribe to 2 VW parts magazines and they offer a variety of different mufflers. The reason I want to change mine is that it is directly under the rear flat portion of fiberglass under the rear tire on the trunk. This section gets quite hot when I drive even short distances. Any idea how to resolve this as I would like to drive to the fingerlakes but hesitate only for this condition
Thanks much
Very happy to have found this group
LeighJuly 26, 2013 at 9:26 pm #257096Welcome to the site. Sorry, I can’t help with your muffler question as mine is a Ford. Be patient and you’ll have several qualified replies in a matter of minutes…usually.

"Drive Happy"July 26, 2013 at 9:48 pm #257097Welcome, Leigh. Several of us have various exhaust hook-ups under our TDs, and some have experienced more or less fiberglass scorching with headers or tail pipes. Sometimes a new muffler rig solves the problem. Sometimes it just takes a bit of persuasion on the existing exhaust pipes. Sometimes both. Do you have a stock Bug muffler right now?

August 1, 2013 at 12:23 am #257100everything back there gets damned hot! I use the VW mexican header from cip.1. It is cheap and I like the sound of it! I put some pink fiberglass on top of it and wrapped light aluminum around it to shield the fiberglass. seems to work ok! My engine has a slight knock on a cold startup until it gets oil pressure so I’m afraid to go TOO FAR from home to really test it! I was going to drive across Canada this summer in it until I started hearing this knock! Darn!
